- Lila Johnson was the Valedictorian and Ellen Suominen was the Salutatorian of their classes, and their respective speeches were printed in the paper. The commencement program was detailed, as was the baccalaureate sermon, given by Superintendent A. L. Winterquist. There was a small photo of the seniors, as well as their class history and a Who's Who of the Senior class listed with the organizations in which they participated by year. A Luther League meeting and program was announced. Also included was a senior class will and prophesy section. The 4-H Club presented a three act comedy play. There was 4-H Club Achievement Day in Cloquet. The senior class hall of fame was listed. Basketball players were given awards such as sweaters and letters. The seniors were entertained at a banquet given at the Winterquist's home, by the Winterquists, with a meal, games, and contests. The seniors motored to Cloquet to have their photos taken at a studio. Members of the Lincoln School orchestra were listed along with the instruments they played. George Kivisto won honors at an invitational track meet held at Cloquet, winning first place in the discus throw and setting a new record, as well as winning third place in shot-put. Seniors were honored at a banquet put on by the juniors. The girls' volleyball and indoor baseball tournaments were held at Lincoln School. A boys' and girls' track tournament was held at Barnum. Boys' track members attended an invitational meet at Cloquetd. Girls who participated in spring sports were named. - The Girls' Glee Club operetta was a great success, and the Club thanked all who helped with it. The English IV and III Classes presented a Thanksgiving program. The honor roll was listed. The girls' saxophone quintet played at the Mother and Daughter Banquet at the Cloquet YMCA Club House. Attendance statistics were given by grades and for top individuals for sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. The 4-H Club met and elected officers. The Lincoln girls' basketball team tied Wrenshalls, while the Lincoln boys' basketball team beat Wrenshall. Both the Lincoln boys' and girls' basketball teams dropped a game.

- The lead article announces that Lincoln School welcomed 4-H club members as they competed in both the Carlton County and district championship contests in bread making, cake making, and garment making. A three act comedy drama play was to be given by community members in the school auditorium. Juniors planned the junior and senior class banquet. The Achievement Day program and exhibits were a great success, with over 300 in attendance. The band gave a surprise appreciation party for Isaac Esko with the assistance of Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Winterquist. The English III Club presented a program to the entire school. A specialist from the Boys and Girls Club from the University Farm in St. Paul visited Lincoln School classes. The biology class took a field trip to explore the old Native American trail which leads to Fond du Lac. Another item concerned Lincoln possibly being a tournament contender, in upcoming track meets and baseball final, as well as girls volley ball and indoor baseball. - Because the condition of roads had improved, the students from the northern part of the school district could now take the motor bus, and classes were no longer compressed into thirty minute periods. The 4-H Club girls served 410 noon lunches and 220 afternoon lunches to Arrowhead Creamery Stockholders. In school news items, one of the lessons taught in civics classes was how to put in a long distance telephone call. Students noted that reference books had no information about Finland, so they asked their parents for information and received a live and first person history lesson in most cases. Moose Lake's basketball team beat the Lincoln boys' basketball team.

- The senior class made plans to publish an annual, chose staff, and secured several ads to help finance it. A one act play was presented by English IV students. Maymie Nygren won an oratorical contest in English III. The freshmen class published a newspaper for their class, with Miss Mauseth as a faculty advisor. An Easter program was to be presented by the high school students and the eighth grade students. In news notes, the north bus students' bus driver took the road through Scanlon and the North Road in transporting them back to Washington School. Bus students enjoyed seeing races between busses and farmers going to the Arrowhead Creamery. The 4-H Club met, and their program was listed. In Town of Thomson news, Mrs. R. Korby and Mrs. M. Forstie made a business trip to Duluth; trips to and from the township by various residents were noted. - Freshmen were to be initiated at a party hosted by the sophomores. Mr. Jensen from Dassel, Minnesota, who was known as the Bird Man because of his knowledge of all things avian, lectured on birds. Violin lessons were offered to Lincoln students, courtesy of Mr. Moody. He offered to have one of his student teachers come to Lincoln School to give either class or private lessons. A high school band was organized, with twelve students. In 4-H Club activities, the Town of Thomson Club named those who won honors and elected officers among the total 51 members. One article was written in Finnish: "Arvoisat Kansalaiset." Subscriptions were sought to the Spotlight at the cost of fifty cents a year for the monthly edition. There were many absences due to boys staying home to dig potatoes. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist gave a speech over the radio at Superior about the Arrowhead Cooperative Creamery. In seventh and eighth grade news, music twas taught by Miss Lindquist three days a week and by Miss Radabaugh on two days. The first snow last year was noted to have occurred on September 25th, while this year it was September 24th. There were advertisements from the following businesses: Juntti Bros. - In Thomson Township news, the monthly Luther League program was listed. An election for the township supervisor was set to be held at the Town Hall. The first moving picture entitled The Heart of a Coward was to be shown under the auspices of the Calf Club. Funerals were held for two aged residents named Elias Juola and Herman Skarp, Sr. The board of directors of the Local Fire Insurance Company met at the Washington School. The board of directors of the Arrowhead Co-Operative Creamery Association met. The Arrowhead Aces played the Proctor Rinkydinks basketball team at West Junior High School in Duluth. Arrowhead Creamery basketball team played the Carlton city team at the high school gym. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist spoke to an all school assembly about his trip to Boston. The Lincoln boys picked an all district team. The basketball season ended with games between Moose Lake and the Barnum. Elections were announced at a forthcoming 4-H Club meeting. - The school faculty expressed their appreciation to the students in this Christmas edition. An operetta in three acts was given by the boys' and girls' Glee Club of Lincoln School. A sleigh ride party from Lincoln School to Washington School and back again via Harney Road was enjoyed by 4-H Club members despite rainy evening weather. - Miss Aartola and Miss Tunturivuo gave interesting lectures at the Washington School about life in India. The Agriculture Department conducted a survey in the community to see whether or not the community people wanted to raise crops that were new to them as well as new equipment they wanted to have. The Luther League elected new officers. Mr. Winterquist took over the Farmers' evening class, due to the illness of Mr.Knuti. The 4-H Club met and thought about having another sleigh ride party. Mid-winter promotions were made at the start of the second semester due to the high IQ achievement scores and scholastic records of several students. The Lincoln girls' basketball team beat a new opponent, Floodwood, while the Floodwood boys' basketball team beat the Lincoln boys' basketball team. - Lincoln students listened to President Hoover's inaugural address on radio, thanks to Superintendent A. L. Winterquist connecting a radio in the assembly room. The band made their first public appearance at a Luther League meeting. The 4-H Club had a reorganizational meeting, with new officers elected. The agriculture classes were privileged to be able to use a 64 bottle milk tester, loaned to the school by the Arrowhead Creamery to test milk. The girls' basketball team beat Barnum, but lost to Alborn. They started practice for volley ball and baseball. The boys' basketball team beat Alborn, but lost to Barnum. - An attorney from Cloquet was the guest speaker at the Armistice Day program. Thomson student Beatrice Lehto played several accordion solos on the radio broadcast of the Finnish Program sponsored by Occident Flour. Mildred Bergstedt was selected by the state 4-H club leader to give a talk about 4-H Clubs on radio station WEBC. The PTA Chorus presented Mrs. Hale of the Denfeld High School to give a lecture at the Lincoln about her year in Finland. Student Harry Osvald returned to Lincoln to complete his senior year of high school after spending six months in the CCC at Gooseberry Falls, where he served as editor of the twenty-page CCC monthly paper, "The Gitchi Gummi Undertow." Superintendent A. L Winterquist wrote an editorial about the high school pupil. There was an "In Memoriam" to Andrew E. Jarvi. In eighth grade school news, Alice Klemo couldn't attend school because of illness in her family that necessitated her entire family being quarantined for six weeks. The Esko Bears made a trip to Elde's Corner to trounce the All Stars from Elde's Corner in football. The English Lutheran Sunday School, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the church, presented an anniversary program at the Lincoln School. Among the various community news items was a story about Mr. H. J. Mattinen, local postmaster, telling about a new mail service from Duluth and Cloquet, bringing the total number of deliveries a day of mail to Esko to six. Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Olson held a dinner party at their home for the Latin classes. News was given for 4-H as well as the Future Farmers, who attended the first annual Future Farmers banquet of the district number 7 at Eveleth. The vocational agricultural students made a field trip to the Carlton County Potato and Grain Show at Cloquet, and exhibited there. At the monthly meeting of the Thomson Township Farmers' Club officers were elected, and plans for the annual Club banquet were made. Among musical selections were a number of selections by the Nopeming Finnish Choir directed by Isaac Esko. Twenty six Thomson Township young men attended the organization of part-time educational classes at the Lincoln School. The members of the Thomson Tommies basketball team were discussed, and the 1937-1938 basketball schedule was listed.

- Students of vocational agriculture were selected by their agricultural instructor to represent Thomson Township at the High School Agriculture Students' Livestock Judging Contest and third annual Tri-State Invitational meet to be held at the Northeast Experiment Station. The band presented a big minstrel show at Lincoln School. The Thomson Township High School Band competed in the Battle of Bands at the Duluth Amphitheater, sponsored by the Duluth Chamber of Commerce. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist answered the question of why a student should go to high school. An "In Memoriam" item honored and memorialized Raymond Daniel Tan. In Washington school news items an article noted that Washington grade children were brushing their teeth with toothpaste sent by Kolynos Company to the students. Community news items were given, one of which noted that one of the oldest settlers here, Mr. Emanuel Himango, died at his home. Basketball practice started for the Thomson Tommies, with inter-mural football games were played. The Red Cross organization was the theme of the monthly PTA meeting.

- New junior high English teacher, Miss Clarice Moen, was introduced. The Girls' Glee Club and Superintendent A. L. Winterquist attempted to get a phonograph to be used at the skating rink. An article urging students to buy the bi-annual Lincoln Log yearbook was included. The Spotlight issues from September to January were entered in the contest of the National Scholastic Press. The band held a skating party. A pep rally was held to raise school spirit for the Carlton basketball game. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist wrote a sobering editorial urging students to think critically, with the world problems and war looming. Sophomore students wrote to international students and received some replies. A junior high assembly focused on thrift. In basketball, Thomson beat Floodwood as well as Grand Marais, but Carlton and Moose Lake beat Thomson. In FFA news, an FFA library was established. The FFA sponsored a Finnish movie, with proceeds to be divided between the FFA Chapter and the Finnish Benefit Fund at the Lincoln School. FFA boys worked on speeches for the public speaking contest. The Esko FFA chapter published the district news letter.

- Committees were selected for the Thomson Township PTA Benefit party. Five girls represented the Thomson Band at the Clinic Demonstration Band held in conjunction with the Band Sectional meeting at the Shrine Auditorium. The Northeast division of the Minnesota Education Association meet for their thirty-second biennial convention in Duluth. Health examinations for both students and staff focused on tuberculosis detection. An article promoted the Boy Scouts. A double quintet was formed from the Girls' Glee Club to sing at the junior class play. A school bus patrol was organized, with bus routes being assigned. Student Helmi Kivisto thanked fellow sophomore students for letters and a Bible received while she was at Ah-Gwah Ching Sanatorium being treated for tuberculosis. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist wrote about transportation insurance. The Owls' Club elected officers. A page was devoted to FFA news, which included news about the national FFA convention and an invitation to FFA graduates to attend meetings. The GAA girls hiked to Cloquet. Despite cold weather, the girls practiced baseball outside. The Thomson Tommies football team reported to practices. A group of boys from Esko went to Jay Cooke Park to play football with Brownell boys, who came a week later to play at Esko.

- Free physical examinations for all staff and students showed that one-third of students had one or more of the following defects: bad teeth, defective tonsils, enlarged thyroid glands, and poor eyesight. Thomson Township schools organized bus patrols to add to safety, by the patrols assisting the bus drivers maintain discipline, flagging buses across railroad tracks, and directing pupils as they crossed roads. An Armistice Day program was scheduled. In addition to an article promoting the Boy Scouts, the township's first Boy Scout Troop was organized. Evening courses were offered in typewriting at Lincoln School. The Girls' Glee Club, directed by Isaac Esko, sang over radio station WEBC. Superintendent A. L. - Many grade school pupils were hard at work on an operetta. The annual staff for the Lincoln Log yearbook was named. A mass meeting of all people interested in contributing for the fund to aid Finland was held at Washington School, with money given to the Red Cross. An article about the Russian Bear growling at peace loving Finland was included. X-Ray reports on students were ready for parents and students to view. Students were urged to fight tuberculosis by buying Christmas Seals. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist wrote about the health of the students and staff. In FFA news, Esko was sixth in the chapter conducting contest held in Virginia. The Annual Farmers' Club Goodwill Banquet was held. Part-time classes at night met to study shop work and agricultural topics. In basketball the Thomson Tommies beat Grand Mariais and Alborn. A professional Chinese basketball team, called the Hong Wah Kues, beat the FFA basketball team. The local FFA basketball team had a busy season lined up.

Winterquist was given an honorary FFA degree at the third Annual District Seven Future Farmer Banquet at Eveleth, due to his outstanding contributions to FFA work and organizing the first FFA chapter in Minnesota, the Thomson Chapter, in 1930. The State Deputy Commissioner of Agriculture, Mr. E. J. They, was the main speaker at the Farmers' Club Banquet. A student reported on a visit to classmate Helmi Koivisto at Ah-Gwah Ching Sanatorium. The Pep Band prepared to play for all home basketball games. The Polar Bear League Conference set the admission price to conference games at twenty-five cents for adults and ten cents for students. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist wrote an article promoting the American Red Cross. A page was given to Boy Scout Activities. A letter about life at the Gillette Hospital from Helen Knuti was printed. Aides were chosen for the Owls' Club. PTA delegates reported on the state convention at their meeting. Twenty one Esko FFA boys attended the annual district banquet. The Esko FFA chapter participated for the first time in the Seventh District Future Farmer Chapter Conducting Contest, about parliamentary procedure. The Thomson Tommies played Duluth Central Trojans in basketball. The A squad got new suits.

- The senior class had their photographs taken at Powers Studio in Duluth. Students gave to the March of Dimes to fight infantile paralysis, also known as polio. Once a week the junior English class listened to a radio program about poets and poetry. The faculty had a skating party. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist wrote an editorial about Washington School and children. The Industrial Arts department had a page devoted to their projects. The 4-H Club held a Bunco and Basket Social party at the Lincoln School. Thomson Tommies beat Meadowlands in basketball as well as Cromwell and McGregor.

- Twenty nine seniors received diplomas at commencement ceremonies, with the Baccalaureate service being held the previous week. The salutatory address was printed, as was the valedictory speech. The senior class history, class will, and class prophecy were given. A Who's Who of the class of 1938 was listed, as well as senior nick-names and descriptions and senior ambitions. An editorial about graduation and what follows was written by Superintendent A. L. Winterquist. The Lincoln Log yearbooks arrived. Agricultural students took a field trip to the Cloquet paper mill, wood conversion plant, and Pine Knot Printing offices. Students participated in the seventh annual regional track meet at Chisholm. The Esko Baseball team got new uniforms. The High School band marched at the School Police Parade at Cloquet. Six boys attended the four day FFA Convention at St. Paul. The Farmers' Club met, with St. Louis County Agent Deke Grussendorf being the speaker.

- The contest to see who sold the most subscriptions to the Lincoln Log yearbook ended. A Finnish Relief mass meeting was set, with pledge cards for voluntary monthly financial aid to Finland distributed. Esko played Meadowlands in a sub-district basketball tournament. Boy Scout week was written about, during the thirtieth year of the Boy Scouts in the United States. Five qualifying typists earned a Gregg Competent Typist's Award. Sanitary Engineer for the Minnesota State Board of Health, Mr. E. Slagle of Duluth spoke to biology and agriculture students. At an assembly a program about several hobbies was presented. The junior class went on a toboggan party at the Nopeming slide. Boy Scout Troop 179 continued to organize, and applied for their legal charter. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist wrote an editorial urging high school courses to be more practical and less college preparatory in nature. Rules of the rink were given for ice skaters. Residents of Esko had frequent sewing bees to make clothing and materials to be shipped to Finland via the Finnish Consulate in New York. Student Helmi Kivisto was improving, according to a classmate who visited her. Five FFA boys submitted project reports in competition for an FFA award. The local FFA chapter sold garden and flower seeds to raise funds for the annual Parents' and Sons' banquet. The Thomson Tommies beat Meadowlands in basketball. Esko's FFA basketball team hosted the amateur tournament, competing for the chance to go to the State Amateur Championship playoffs at Minneapolis. The teams were Carlton, Columbia Clothing of Duluth, Murphy Finance of Duluth, Harbor Inn of Two Harbors, Merchants of Two Harbors, Cloquet, Aurora, and Hill City. A page was devoted to Polar League Standings as well as individual free throw averages.
