Description:: Students stand, in military arrangement, outside of St. Bernard's convent school holding rifles. St. Bernard's was a school for boys staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet from 1905-1910. It was also a military academy with training provided to the boys by a Civil War veteran. Staffing a school with military training was very unusual for the Sisters of St. Joseph. The school was destroyed by fire in 1910.

Description:: The Catholic School for Girls in Avoca was started in 1883 by the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus and included fifty Native American girls who were sent there by Bishop Ireland. The school closed in 1902, but reopened as St. Bernard Hall for boys in 1905.
