This photograph of the A.M. Miller sawmill and crew in front of the mill building shows water barrels on the roof. The barrels were used to attempt to put out fires. Some crew members are sitting on a lumber pile located there. Andreas M. Miller's sawmill was located approximately one mile north of the Village of Thomson on the Midway River.

The official 1873 founding document of the Minnesota Academy of Natural Sciences (later to become the Minnesota Academy of Science) contains its original Constitution and By-Laws. Article II states that, It shall be the object of the Academy to observe and investigate natural phenomena; to make collections of specimens illustrating the various departments of science; to name, classify, and preserve the same; also, to discuss such questions as shall come within the province of the Academy. The By-Laws direct the establishment of a museum, as well as regular meetings at which scientific investigations will be communicated either orally or in writing.

Ashley C. Riggs kept a ledger book journal from 1852-1873. The earliest entries are from Cold Spring (Stearns County), Minnesota and Watab (Benton County), Minnesota. The ledger's earliest entries record his activiites as an Indian Agent for the Winnnebago Indians for the years 1852-1853. The second portion of the ledger is Riggs' diary which documents his activities in and around Monticello, Minnesota for the years 1864-1873. Riggs was a key figure in the development of the Minnesota Territory and early Monticello, Minnesota community when he laid claim in 1854 to a piece of land on the Mississippi River. He built othe first ferry to shuttle people across the River. In 1861 he enlisted in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

Handbill briefly describing the Baldwin School expenses and accommodations, for the Summer Term beginning April 28, 1873, and the Fall Term beginning September 8, 1873. The top of the handbill has a "CHRISTO ET PATRIAE" seal, and the reverse side of the handbill consists of a chart for a week's courses and a rating system of "10, Perfect" to "0, Failure", possibly for grading.
