Central Hillside; Darling Observatory; Ninth Avenue West and Third Street; 910 West Third Street; John Darling left a $20,000 trust fund for its upkeep; it holds a 9 inch refractive telescope with a focal length of 130 inches that weighs about 3,000 pounds with the 10 foot tall pier; it was built by W. M. Gaertner and Company for John Darling in 1917; the observatory was operated by UMD after 1964 and finally closed with the telescope relocated to UMD; fence; dome roof; stucco
