George D. Johnson was born on February 18, 1917 in Duluth. After attending several area colleges and universities, Johnson worked in the American Steel and Wire division of U.S. Steel. He served his first term as mayor from 1953-1956 under the "commissioner" model of government. When Mayor E. Clifford Mork died in office in 1962, Johnson was appointed to take his place and won the subsequent election in 1963 under the "strong mayor" government model. After his terms he rose to prominence in the United Steelworks of America, the Minnesota Mayors Association, the League of Minnesota Municipalities, and the City Charter Commission. He died in 1999, leaving behind his wife Eleanor and two children.
Eastman Hall, named for Alvah Eastman, resident director at St. Cloud State (1901-1908, 1926-1933), opened in 1930 as the campus gymnasium. It served until 1965 when Halenbeck Hall opened its doors.
This view shows light the industrial Canal Park area at the left as you approach the Aerial Bridge and the 1966 completed Duluth Arena Auditorium at the center with its expansive parking lot. Sailboats and small pleasure craft are in the harbor. Fifth Avenue West overpass is at the far right. Note that Canal Park was not a tourist destination until the 1980s. It was zoned as a light industrial site for decades.

This post card caption says The University of Minnesota, Duluth (UMD) was established on July 1, 1947 with 1.432 students, had 5,000 by 1967 and expects about 5,800 by 1970. UMD offers 53 majors in 34 academic areas plus 18 pre-professional programs and Air Force ROTC. UMD is one of five University of Minnesota campuses.

This booklet is the catalog and notes to an exhibition of weavings by Hilma Berglund. The cover includes an illustration of a floor loom with all of the parts labeled. The catalog opens with an essay by Laurence Schmeckebier, Department of Fine Arts, University of Minnesota. The rest of the booklet lists and describes each work. The pieces are samples of a wide variety of weave structures.
Hilma Berglund screen-printed this Christmas card in 1967 using reddish brown ink on cream cardstock. The card is cut into a triangle and sand particles are glued along the two long edges. The card was accompanied by her 1967 Christmas letter. The card measure 8.3 x 21.5 cm.
This issue covers the Commissioner's resignation and subsequent appointment to the position of Deputy Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration, construction with the largest steel girders ever used in St. Paul, and the appointment of a temporary Commissioner of Highways. Ceramic Swedish style fireplace in the room that was used by Lillian Turnblad as her art studio in the Turnblad mansion. Completed in 1908, the Swan J. Turnblad mansion was built in the French Chateauesque style. The house became the American Swedish Institute in 1929.
Volume 16, number 4 of the Minnesota Library Association (MLA) Bulletin was published in November, 1967.
