The photograph caption reads, "Asphult, 1889-1919." The church building was built in 1890 and vacated in 1965. In 1975 the building was moved to the Pennington County Historical Village in Thief River Falls, Minnesota.
This history of the Duluth Diocese of the Catholic Church, which was formed in 1889 and embraced the counties of Aitkin, Becker, Beltrami, Carlton, Cass, Clay, Cook, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Itasca, Kittson, Lake, Marshal, Norman, Pine, Polk, and St. Louis, includes short biographies of early missionaries in Northern Minnesota. It also has histories and photographs of some early Catholic churches, schools, orphanages, and hospitals, information on Indian missions and on the Sisters of St. Benedict, who founded Duluth's St. Mary's Hospital and four other hospitals in the diocese. The book also provides a list of priests who worked in the diocese from 1889 to 1914.
"Kingo Menigheds 25 Aars Jubileum" printed on the photo, is Norwegian for "Kingo Congregation 25 year Jubilee." The photograph also includes "Fosston, Minn., July 21, 1909." Kingo Lutheran Church is located at 220 Johnson Avenue North, Fosston, Minnesota.
Photograph of the memorial bouquets and wreaths from Sam K. Halvorson's funeral. One wreath features a ribbon which reads, "Father." Bolow a photographic portrait of Halvorson is a bracket which reads, "At Rest."
Rules provided by the Bishop for the parish priests in the recently formed Diocese of Crookston, including detailed reminders about liturgical matters and customs to be followed. Of particular historical interest is the rule and comment about mixed marriages, i.e., marriages between Catholics and non-Catholics.
