Studio portrait of Ole Sverre Rigg (1825-1909) and Johanne Sophie Quam Rigg. They were immigrant farmers in Minnewaska Township. They had eleven children, five of whom lived to adulthood.
Studio portrait of Reverend Peter S. Reque (July 15, 1842-October 4, 1879). Reque served in the Civil War. He graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri in 1869. He was called to "Vor Frelsers Menighet" and was the first resident Lutheran pastor in Pope and Stevens counties.

Studio portrait of Reverend Magnus Koefod. He was born in Norway on March 9, 1848. He was pastor of Indherred Lutheran Church in Starbuck, Minnesota from 1875 until 1892.
Studio portrait of Dr. J. G. Whittemore. In addition to medical practice, Whittemore was Pope County Auditor for six years and served two terms in the Minnesota Legislature.

White Bear Lake Church, 1867-1933. The name changed to Barsness Lutheran Church reflecting its location in Barsness Township in 1933 and remains an active congregation in 2010. This image shows the exterior of the church built in 1883, north and west facades as viewed from across the cemetery. A new basement was built under the structure in 1930 and was fully remodeled and redecorated in 1937.
The Chippewa Lutheran Church building was completed in 1885. The name of the church changed to Rolling Forks Lutheran Church in 1958. The building was moved to the village of Swift Falls in 1966 where it still stands as part of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, ELCA.
A patriotic parade on Minnesota Avenue as seen from the Pope County Courthouse lawn. The Glenwood Hotel is seen in the background. The original hotel structure (1881) is seen on Minnesota Reflections as the Bartke Residence and drug store. Matt Ward expanded the property into the Glenwood Hotel, also known as the Ward Hotel. The Ward Family operated the hotel from 1885 to 1945. The building was razed in 1945, the lumber salvaged to construct a new Lake Reno Presbyterian Church north of Glenwood at the corner of MN Highway 29 and Pope County Highway 28.

Portrait of Iver P. Barsness and Ingebar Drevdahl Barsness. They emigrated from Norway in 1854 settling first near Madison, Wisconsin. In 1870, they were among the first settlers in Walden Township in Pope County.
school students playing games at recess. The Starbuck Public school was built in 1890 as a single story, two room building. It was soon expanded to a two story, four room building. It was razed when a large brick school was built in 1905.
Photo montage of Benjamin and Bereth Wollan and their children. The Wollan family were early merchants in Pope County starting the White Bear Center store, Wollan Bros. Store and the Fremad Association. The Fremad Association grew to a major commercial enterprise including mercantile department store, lumber yard and bank.
Studio portrait of Tory Thorson (1846-1899). Thorson served in the Civil War in the 2nd Wisconsin Calvary. He was also the first Minnesota State Legislator from Pope County, served as Pope County Clerk of Court, Postmaster and Judge of Probate.

Nels [Nils] Forde was ordained in 1876 serving congregations in Clay County, Minnesota (1876-1881), Amherst and Stevens Point, Wisconsin (1881-1892), and Indherred, Immanuel and St. John's Congregations in Pope County (1892-1917). Nels and Nora were married in 1882. Nora contributed her musical talents and leadership to the Young Peoples Society and church choirs.
Frank M. Eddy (1856-1929) was the first native Minnesotan to represent our state in Congress. Eddy was Pope County clerk of court for ten years, Seventh District Representative to Congress (1895-1903), publisher of the Sauk Centre Herald (1916), and worked in the Minnesota Secretary of State's office (1918-1929). This image is a half tone campaign poster.

Hans Johnshoy (1847-1937) arrived in Pope County from Norway via Wisconsin in 1870, settling in Blue Mounds Township. The Lake Reno Reformed Presbyterian Church was organized in 1869. Rev. Edward Elsey was the first minister, 1882-1896. In this photo, Rev. Meyer is standing at the door. Rev. Meyer served the church from 1898-1900. This wood frame building replaced the first church which was built in 1882. It was moved from its first site on the Hogan farm to the Cummins farm in 1938. It burned in October 1943.

Studio portrait of the John and Margaret Cooley family. John Cooley (1837-1908) came to the United States as a 15 year old stow-away on a windjammer sailing from Hampshire, England in 1852. He married Margaret Taylor (1839-1927) of Rochester, New York in 1858. They arrived in Pope County in 1868 after several years in Wabasha County.
