The Fremad Association, incorporated in 1874, was a major Pope County department store growing out of the Wollan family store at White Bear Center (1870), later Wollan Bros. store at Glenwood (1872). The corner portion of this building was built in 1893 with an addition to the north (right in photo) before 1900. The upper level had professional offices and a community hall.
Northern Cement Drain Tile Company of Starbuck made concrete blocks for residential, commercial, farm, silo and decorative use. It opened in 1916 with Charles Turnell, president, manager and engineer; and Gust W. Peterson and George H. Snyder. Emil and Victor Larson later purchased the company. Earl Larson and sons, Darryl and Roger Larson, also operated the company. The block factory ceased production in 1985.
The Starbuck Community Hall and movie theater was built in 1937 with federal WPA funds. Uses included American Legion, City offices, cinema, senior nutrition program, and public reception space.
