The Fifth National Conference of Principals and Superintendents of Institutions for Deaf-Mutes took place during July 9-13, 1884 at the Minnesota Institute for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind in Faribault. At this conference, the advisability of employing deaf teachers to teach deaf students was discussed, and this issue became part of the oralism vs. manualism debate in deaf education. Louis C. Tuck (1851-1949) was a graduate of the American School for the Deaf in Connecticut where he studied under Laurent Clerc, and a graduate of the National Deaf-Mute College (later renamed Gallaudet College) in 1870. He was a teacher and librarian at the Minnesota School for the Deaf during 1882-1922, and served as librarian until 1933. He is shown standing in front of his house in Faribault, which is believed to have been on Fifth Street and was one block from the campus of the Minnesota School for the Deaf.

Male students are standing on the left in front of the South Wing, and female students are standing on the right in front of the North Wing. The North and South Wings of Mott Hall served as the first permanent buildings for classrooms and dormitories during 1874-1879. The North Wing was the first to be occupied on March 17, 1868, and the South Wing was occupied in the fall of 1873. The two wings were almost exact counterparts, and were connected by a covered passageway on the first floor level.

Dr. Jonathan Lovejoy Noyes was the second superintendent of the Minnesota Institute for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind, and served during 1866-1896. His signature is printed as "J.L. Noyes" in cursive script below the picture. The school's name changed from "Minnesota Institute for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind" to "Minnesota Institute for Defectives (Deaf, Blind, and Feeble-Minded)" during his administration.

Elwood A. Stevenson was the fourth superintendent of the Minnesota School for the Deaf, and served during 1924-1928. He was the hearing son of deaf parents, and his wife, Edith Stevenson, was also a hearing CODA (child of deaf adults). He studied at Gallaudet College to become a teacher of the deaf.

George Wing was a teacher at the Minnesota Institute for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind during 1872-1885. He developed Wing's Symbols, a system of symbols used for written language instruction at the school until 1976. The symbols followed the rules of grammar, and served to represent the functions of sentence parts. The portrait was part of a formal presentation to the school. The attached label reads: "George Wing, Inventor of 'Wing's Symbols', Teacher in this School, 1872-1885."

James N. Tate was the third superintendent of the Minnesota School for the Deaf, and served during 1896-1923. The school's name changed from "Minnesota Institute for Defectives (Deaf, Blind, and Feeble-Minded)" to "Minnesota School for the Deaf" during his administration. The school's Tate Hall was named after him while he was still working at the school, and he resided in its south wing until his death.
