One of the school's founders, Judge Rodney A. Mott, rented Major Fowler's store on what is now the corner of Division and Central Avenue in Faribault, and the school opened in this temporary home on September 9, 1863. This building was used during 1863-1868, and the school's name changed to "Minnesota Institute for the Deaf, Dumb and Blind" during this time.
