In 1944 the Variety Club initiated a fund drive for Dr. Morris Shapiro’s rheumatic fever treatment and research program. By 1951 the Variety Club Heart Hospital was completed and provided services for both adults and children, including a 40-bed pediatric unit with a playroom, classroom and an auditorium. Dr. Morrill, president of the University of Minnesota, is at the far left.

Jewish organizations worked within the larger community to promote and educate about democratic values. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) focused on civil rights discrimination in the South, but also raised a national campaign to expose resort discrimination against Jews and Blacks. The ADL's "Crack the Quota" campaign reached its peak in Minnesota during the late 1950s.

Gemilus Chesed was a North Side Orthodox congregation that combined social service functions, such as loans and charitable relief, with religious services. The congregation was founded the 1910s and merged in 1969 with another former North Side congregation, Shari Zedek, to form Shari Chesed in St. Louis Park.

The boys basketball team pictured in uniform with their coach. The Emanuel Cohen Center had no gym: games were played at settlement houses in other parts of the city with gymnasiums. E. C. C. games were often played at the Wells Settlement House, which served the North Side's Finnish community.

View of the front exterior of the Emanuel Cohen Center. The Center's primary role was to provide the North Side Jewish youth with an alternative to being on the street. The E. C. C. had a pool and a gymnasium, and sponsored sports teams for both young men and women. It also housed a dental clinic, well-baby and children's clinic for young mothers. The building still stands on Elwood Avenue in Minneapolis, across from the former Jewish Sheltering Home building.

Adults and children walk through the entrance of the J. E. C. in this posed shot. This photograph is significant in that one of the principle funders of the Center, businessman and philanthropist George Kaplan is in the photo. The Jewish Educational Center was the precursor to the St. Paul J. C. C. It served as a recreation and education facility. And by 1939 over 100 community groups, including Boy and Girl Scouts; a theater company, and two orchestra were using the facility.

Etheldoris Grais grew up in Hibbing, Minnesota and attended Hibbing High School. She married Arnold Grais, a pharmacist, and together they ran several Iron Range drug stores.

Mt. Zion became the first Jewish congregation in Minnesota Territory, receiving its charter in 1857. The building in the photograph at 1300 Summit Avenue in St. Paul is the current home of the congregation. Designed by Eric Mendelsohn, the building is in the Modernist Style, one of four Jewish community buildings designed by Mendelssohn during the post-war period. Groundbreaking occurred in 1950, and the building was dedicated in 1954.

Fannie Cohen wearing a white pharmacist's coat and standing amongst shelves of medicines. Fannie Cohen was one of the first women to graduate from the University of Minnesota Pharmacy School. She was born in 1901 to Romanian immigrant parents, and graduated with her degree in 1922. Show worked in Hospital pharmacies in Duluth, Rochester and St. Paul. She was a lifetime member of Temple Israel in Minneapolis, and was bat mitzvahed in 1977 at the age of 75.

N. C. J. W. was founded in 1893 under the leadership of Hannah Greenebaum Solomon. It has a progressive legacy of providing vocational training, medical and educational services, judicial advocacy for minors and international aid. The picnic was held at Bass Lake, and provided an opportunity for butchers throughout the Twin Cities and the region to socialize. Picnics appear to have been held well into the 50s. The woman in the back row was not likely to have been a butcher, as it was not considered to be women's work.

The International Institute was founded in Minneapolis in 1919 as a non-sectarian, non-political service agency. The Intercultural Exhibit was help to promote intercultural awareness and appreciation. The picture was taken to document the first Jewish entry into the Exhibit.

Habonim Camps were built and sustained by campers, and governed according to he principles of the Labor Zionist Movement. Minnesota campers were bused to Yad Ari, which was located on 160 acres in Waupaca, WI.

Florence Kunian Schoff was a Hadassah leader for the Minneapolis Hadassah chapter, and an avid Zionist. Schoff made multiple trips to Israel on fact-finding tours related to Hadassah projects, which feature support for public health and hospital projects. The other two people in the photo are unidentified.

The founders of Pioneer Women, posed outdoors for this photograph. Pioneer Women was an international group of Labor-Zionist women who made Aaliyah to Palestine during the 1920s. They came with a feminist agenda, to be full partners in the political and economic work of building a Jewish state. A women's group formed in Minnesota to raise funds to support their counterparts in Palestine. Four men perform on a stage decorated with calendars in costume (doctor, patient, doctor, lawyer) at the Mount Sinai Hospital Women's Auxiliary Annual Ball, the biggest social event of the season. Listed on the back in no particular order: Martin Orbach; Art Felsenberg; Bob Meslansky; Alex Hartman. Mount Sinai Hospital was built in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during the 1950s to address the discrimination Jewish doctors experienced admitting Jewish patients to local hospitals. The Auxiliary members promoted the work of Mount Sinai Hospital and assisted needy members of the community through volunteer service, fundraising and public relations.

The children in the picture are displaying their hobbies. Many of the children in the Jewish neighborhood on Minneapolis's North Side attended John Hay Elementary School. The school was located at Penn Avenue North and 10th Avenue North; it closed in 2003 as North Side school enrollments declined.

The Minneapolis Chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women was founded in 1894 by Nina Morais Cohen. Cohen was a nationally recognized leader: when Susan B. Anthony came to Minneapolis, she stayed at Nina and Emanuel Cohen's home. The N. C. J. W. is a volunteer organization working for social change based upon Jewish values. In its earliest years, volunteers worked in settlement houses, acted as juvenile court advocates, helped provide vocational training for immigrant and poor women and girls, and helped develop free school-based health services. Fanny Brin is second from the right.

Rabbi Deinard died from a heart attack just as temple members were gathering for Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in Judaism. The year before the temple had changed its name from Shaarai Tov to Temple Israel. Seven years later in 1928 the congregation would build a new temple at the same location under Rabbi Albert Minda.

Neighborhood House was founded primarily to provide recreational, educational and social activities to residents of the West Side neighborhood. It maintained an active recreational program for girls in the neighborhood, teaching sewing, cooking and other domestic arts.

Five gentleman hold shovels to the ground at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Temple of Aaron synagogue on September 20th, 1970. A photograph of men in suits sitting at long tables in a hall. In the 1920s, as a greater number of Jews began to work in downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, social clubs sprang up to met their needs. In both cities, access to the existing clubs was limited to Gentiles. In 1908, a group of Jewish graduates from the University of Minnesota founded the Gymal Doled Club, named for the third and fourth letters of the Jewish alphabet. Gymal Doled absorbed other Jewish social clubs, and finally changed names in 1945 to the Standard Club, to reflect the American acculturation of its members.

Hadassah draws on both the ideology of Zionism and on women's sense of social responsibility to elicit support for Israel, youth activities and educational services. National programs that were implemented in Minnesota included "linen showers" for medical units, money collection for school lunch programs in Palestine, and providing Jewish-German children foster-homes in Palestine during WWII. Members also made time to play and socialize.

Photograph of a display window with women's clothing and informational materials. The clothing in the window (probably the Miller Vocational High School in Minneapolis) was all hand sewn by members, and sold at the Funtennial, Hadassah's annual fundraiser at the Minneapolis Armory. Hadassah's membership between the end of WWII and the 1970s swelled. By the mid-1960s, more than 1,000 women were meeting in 80 minyans, socializing and fundraising for children's and healthcare causes in Israel. One of the popular activities was providing clothing to send to Israel.

Hadassah members met in small and large groups to socialize and to raise money for Israel. The pushke, or canister, in the picture, could be found in many, if not most Jewish homes in the 1950s and 1960s. The blue and white canisters with the outline of Israel were used to collect money for land purchases and reforestation efforts, and were a direct reminder of the bond between Israel and the American Jews.

"Lammie" high school sorority girls planning for a Halloween party. Jewish high school girls formed their own sororities in the public schools, like North High, where they could plan social activities and take part in service projects.

Frishberg owned two North Dakota men's haberdasheries with Charles Cohen in the 1920s. Cohen died in a hunting accident, and Frishberg closed the two Dakota stories and set up a shop in Buffalo MN. He soon sold the Buffalo store and moved to St. Paul. Frishberg is on the right.

Marking the beginning of Hanukkah, Harry Lerner of Minneapolis, lights a candle in Jerusalem. Lerner spent time in Israel during the early years of the country's existence, one of thousands of Americans who lent time, professional expertise and resources to insure Israel's survival. American Jews were encouraged to purchase Israel Bonds to support Israel's economic stability, and did so in record numbers.

Harry Silberstein driving a horse-drawn wagon used for collecting scrap metal. Scrap metal salvage was one of the occupations accessible to Jews. For immigrants leaving Europe in the late 1880s, scrap collection was an open field which required minimal capitalization and a willingness to move about. It also allowed the collector to be his own boss and avoid mandatory factory work hours which would have conflicted with Sabbath observance. Paper-Calmenson was founded 1891 and is still in operation.

Men and women gathered around a piano. Hazomir was a choral movement begun in Lodz, Poland in 1899. It became successful in other cities in Poland and Russia, and branches popped up later in the United States. The repertory included Jewish and Israeli folk music. The photograph features members of the Minnesota Hazomir.

The Hebrew class instructor stands with the students of the Hebrew class of West Side B'nai Israel Synagogue. The photograph was taken at a class outing in Lincoln Park in Duluth. B'nai Israel consolidated with congregation Adas Israel in 1930.

Graduates and instructors stand arranged on the steps of the Emanuel Cohen Center. The Emanuel Cohen Center provided recreation space and social services to the North Minneapolis community. The Center was named for Emanuel Cohen, an attorney and the Center's principle benefactor.

Members of the Hey and Vav Club sit at two long tables which are set with coffee cups and saucers. A social club for members of the Jewish community in Duluth. Because Jews were excluded from gentile clubs, the community formed its own, which helped forge social and business connections among members. Membership in clubs also enforced an American, rather than an exclusively ethnic identity. Several years after its founding, the Hay Vav club Americanized it's name to the Covenant Club.

Front row, left to right, is Beatrice Nildes, Etta Hallock and Rose Shapiro. Dress-up parties were popular informal social events thrown by female friends, or occasionally by women's organizations. Parties offered an opportunity to dress out of character, socialize, and enjoy each other's company. Costumes could be lavish, symbolic or simple. Participants often dressed as men, brides or babies.

Three unidentified men read from the Torah during the High Holidays. High Holidays are observed during the ten day period between Day One: Roshashna, the Jewish New Year, and Day Ten, Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. These two holy days are the most important days of the year for Jews, and they are also the only holidays that have no historical foundation. They are religious observances, focusing on family and congregational gatherings, emphasizing reflection, fasting and prayer.

Stevie Franker and Gerald Bubis pose for a photograph to raise awareness of the Hillel students food drive for displaced persons. Hillel students were involved with relief work for Jewish refugees at the end of the war. During Purim celebrations on campus, food drive co-chairs Stevie Franker and Gerald Bubis posed for a publicity photo to generate interest in Hillel's drive. The photo would be published in the AMERICAN JEWISH WORLD, the local Jewish newspaper.

Harry Goldie had an interesting career, which included amateur boxing, coaching, and real estate development. He spearheaded the creation of the Calhoun Beach Club, and is shown here welcoming Minneapolis Mayor Hubert Humphrey to the club's opening. While the club was chartered in 1928 and building began in 1929, financing for it foundered during the Depression, and it didn't officially open until 1946. Goldie's dream for the club entailed an egalitarian social and athletic space that would welcome members regardless of race, religion or sex.

A young Hyman Berman stands in his Boy Scout uniform holdng semaphores. Scouting was available to both boys and girls. Although scouting's intent was in part to Americanize participants through civic service and outdoor recreation, the sponsors of most all of the Jewish scout troops were synagogues.
