The presence of Peavey elevators in the Duluth harbor dates back to 1900. In 1930, F.H. Peavey expands the Peavey Duluth terminal with concrete silos. In 1999, the Seaway Port Authority lets contract for razing of Occident and Peavey elevators. Garfield Avenue is the main street that runs the length of Rice's Point. It is the street in the lower left corner of this photograph. Houses and businesses on Garfield are parallel to the rail yards of the Northern Pacific; Great Northern; Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha. Garfield Avenue takes you to the Interstate Bridge.

The American Exchange National Bank staff assembled with the bank's founder Hamilton M. Peyton who is in the front row with the white side burns. Peyton was bank president from 1879-1921. The bank merged with First National Bank and renamed First and American National Bank in 1929. It became First American National Bank in 1958, First National in 1974 and Norwest in 1983. In 1998 Norwest merged with Wells Fargo and elected to take the more familiar name Wells Fargo.

At the intersection of Lake Avenue and Superior Street this fire equipment collided with a streetcar. One fireman, Archie Finlayson, was killed, and the streetcar driver was charged with failure to give right of way. The two-story building in the background is the Freimuth's store under construction.

Fitzsimmons-Derrig Company was the business of Charles Fitzsimmons and Andrew A. Warfield. The wholesale fruit business began in 1890 as George W. Martin and Co. with Charles Fitzsimmons as an employee. In 1891 it was Martin, Fitzsimmons and Warfield. In 1892-1893 Fitzsimmons and Warfield, located at 126 West Michigan Street the address of this image. Later Fitzsimmons Derrig and Palmer. Some of the names on the wagons indicate prior partnerships as the company's ownership evolved.

In this house at 600 East Second Street, Eugene C. Grady and Matthew T. Hughes offered mortuary services from 1926. In 1887 Henry and Alameda Bell commissioned Oliver Traphagen to design this Queen Anne style house in the Ashtabula Heights neighborhood. When his bank failed in 1893, the Bells moved to California.
