Student Soldiers
Although the war itself was brief, it still had an impact back home in Minnesota, especially since entire contingents of young men from each community had volunteered to serve in some capacity. Male college enrollment dropped drastically at some Minnesota schools of higher education, like Hamline University, Carleton College, and the State Normal Schools.
Editors of The Normalia, the student newspaper at the State Normal School in St. Cloud, devoted articles and entire issues to the Spanish-American War and their fellow students who were serving abroad.
