Schools in north-central Minnesota (1871-1909). The first log school, though built by the parishioners, was supported by government funds and was, therefore, also the district school for Pierz. By 1889, the public versus parochial school controversy demanded a clarification of schools. The parishioners then claimed the school they had built as their St. Edward's Parochial School. Later, the second floor of the school was opened as a high school. The school was then renamed St. Joseph's School (Saint Benedict's Monastery Archives).

The sixth volume of Randolph M. Probstfield's personal journals, which he wrote in a ledger book. Probstfield began writing this volume in 1873, after he had settled at his farm in Oakport Township on the Red River. Randolph Probstfield mixed his accounting records with information on daily events. These accounts�discuss�weather,�agriculture, visitors, household expenses, and many other details of family life.

This drawing shows the a cross section of a canal used to feed water through turbines to generate power. The tunnel was embedded in the limestone near St. Anthony Falls with a base of concrete and shell of masonry. See also umn191811.
