At the end of the school year Vivian Anderson is valedictorian and Mabel Johnson is salutatorian. Jane Lindholm won the written part of the Carlton County spelling contest and was therefore eligible to represent Carlton County at the State Fair's spelling contest. The vote totals for four best male athletes were listed. Mr. Carlson's chemistry students took a field trip to the Morgan Park Steel Plant and Cement Plant. Items were given about Lincoln school students as well as sixth, seventh, and eighth graders. The lower class girls won the volley ball championship. An interesting article was written on the growth of Esko's Corner over the previous fifty years, with mention of a one room schoolhouse, Hjalmer Mattinen's Store, a blacksmith shop, Arrowhead Creamery, a garage, a shoemaker's shop, and two new homes. Scarlet fever ravaged the area, as evidenced by an article reporting on Anna Norman, the county nurse, and Superintendent A. L. Winterquist visiting houses to check for Scarlet Fever and to quarantine as many houses as needed.
Interview with Ella Thomas, sister of Emma Bartling. She gives some family history and tells of her sister being a teacher in the rural schools of Crow Wing County. This interview is part of a Works Progress Administration (WPA) in Crow Wing County during the years 1936-1939. This outreach effort sought to record personal accounts of the lives of early Crow Wing County pioneers and settlers.
The front side of "Minnesota Bikeways: Map 21 - East Central Minnesota" contains a legend of signs and symbols, the larger bikeways map, and the map index. The back side contains: a list of county, municipal, and state parks, state forests, and state rest areas covered in the map; bicycling safety tips; a "potpourri" article; inset maps of Hermantown, Proctor, Carlton, Scanlon, and Cloquet; and a checklist of touring supplies with a diagram of where to put supplies on a bike. MnDOT's bikeway maps serve as a reference guide illustrating major historical and cultural points of interest in Minnesota, public park lands and facilities, equipment, and safety information. They also depict road analyses for bicycle travel, location of paved road shoulders and off-road bikeways, and controlled access roads where bicycles are prohibited. There are 54 maps in the Statewide Series (1979-1983), 4 maps in the Statewide Quadrant Series (1986-1993), and 2 maps in the Metro Series (1989). Legislatively mandated, these maps were prepared as convenient guides to help bicyclists select their routes. Each map is unique and signifies a historical reference to the state of bicycle facilities at the time of publication.
