Mrs. Louis Rubenstein posed for this portrait during the annual fundraiser. The woman selling the most tickets was named queen of the bazaar. Beth El Congregation was composed of younger members of the North Side Jewish community who were interested in reviving certain aspects of religious expression, including Torah study (in English) and Friday evening Shabbat services.

Description:
A young boy sits in the driver's seat of a truck while Norm Silberstein stands in the truck bed. Scrap metal collection was a business dominated by Jews throughout America's large cities. It was considered "dirty work", and therefore open to immigrants looking for jobs. Louis Paper and Moses Calmenson founded their business in 1891.

Description:
Two male customers wait inside the tailor shop while Simon holds a measuring tape and Sadie works at a sewing machine. Turn of the century Jewish immigrants were closely associated with all aspects of the garment industry. While many worked in shirt-making factories located on the East Cost, others had tailoring skills they brought with them from Europe. They opened small shops in urban areas where customers could come to them for services.

Photograph showing fathers and sons sitting at long tables which are set with dinnerware. Mikro Kodesh was organized as Anshei Russia (Men of Russia) in 1901, and later changed it's name to Mikra'e Kodesh, or Holy Assembly. The name change bore the suggestion that national distinctions among North Side congregants where becoming less important to membership. By the time this photo was taken, Mikro Kodesh boasted a membership of several hundred families.

Men and women seated at long tables, set with food and drink. Tifereth B'nai Jacob was referred to as the "Elwood Shul" because of it's location on Elwood Avenue. There was a striking concentration of Jewish community life around the Elwood Shul, including the Emanuel Cohen Community Center and the Jewish Sheltering Home, as well as several other synagogues and a bustling retail center a few blocks away on Plymouth Avenue.

Description:
Dr. Moses Barron was instrumental in the creation of Mt. Sinai Hospital in Minneapolis. Prior to hospital construction in 1949, Jewish doctors were denied admitting privileges to local hospitals. Determined to address this discrimination, the Jewish community raised the capital to build Mt. Sinai hospital in South Minneapolis. Initially, Dr. Barron pushed for a Jewish-sponsored hospital out of concern that Jewish doctors serving on the war-front and had full permitting privileges would be frustrated in their practices upon returning home. Dr. Barron served as Mt. Sinai's first Chief of Staff.

Portrait photograph of Ida Cook sitting in a chair. The Cook family, headed by Rabbi Isaac Cook and his wife Ida, arrived in Duluth in the 1880s from Lithuania. They organized minyans and their home served as a welcoming center for new immigrants coming to the city. Ida Cook spearheaded the establishment of Duluth's first Hebrew school.

Portrait photograph of Rabbi Joseph Hurvitz and his wife, Rebbetzin Rae Hurvitz. Known in his St. Paul Lowertown community as "Der Roiter Rov" (the Red Rabbi), Rabbi Hurvitz lead the Sons of Jacob and Adath Yeshurun congregations from the 1910s through the 1950s. Though he was a traditionalist, he consciously used both English and Yiddish in worship and congregational gatherings to help validate his immigrant congregants sense that both languages and the cultures they represented were of equal importance in their new home.

Description:
George Gordon began his life-long career as a Jewish educator at the first Hebrew Free School on Minneapolis's North Side, where as a twenty-year old, he helped teach the Hebrew alphabet to young students. He earned an M. D. degree in 1900, then devoted the rest of his professional life to promoting all aspects of Jewish education. Dr. Gordon taught at Hamline University, and created and oversaw adult, collegiate, high school and Hebrew education classes at the Minneapolis Talmud Torah.

Joseph Schanfield was born in Romania, and became successful in Minneapolis' booming turn of the century real estate and insurance markets. At 23, he became the head of the Adath Jeshurun congregation on Minneapolis's South Side. During his years of service to the community, there were few leadership positions he did not hold, including president of the Jewish Sheltering Home and the Jewish Home for the Aged, as well as the Adath Cemetery Association.
