It was designed for the Minneapolis Saint Paul and Saulte Ste Marie Railroad by the office of Buildings and Bridges. The dates on the pages vary. The Fremad Association, incorporated in 1874, was a major Pope County department store growing out of the Wollan family store at White Bear Center (1870), later Wollan Bros. store at Glenwood (1872). The corner portion of this building was built in 1893 with an addition to the north (right in photo) before 1900. The upper level had professional offices and a community hall.

The Fremad originated as a trading post on the Red River ox cart trail near Indherred Church, growing into a diversified group of businesses including dry goods, general merchandise, department store, lumber yard and bank at Glenwood.
