The Catholic School for Girls in Avoca was started in 1883 by the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus and included fifty Native American girls who were sent there by Bishop Ireland. The school closed in 1902, but reopened as St. Bernard Hall for boys in 1905.
The Herman Weirauch family whom the town of Wirock was named after. Pictured are Mr. and Mrs. Weirauch along with their daughters Adeline, Rose and Eleanora.
It was known at the time as "Our Nation's Most Tragic Accident" in which two vehicles met in a head-on collision on April 21, 1940. Twelve victims were killed and one survived in this horrible accident.
