Exterior view of the City Hotel of St. James. This Building was rebuilt after a fire in 1903 and became a rooming house later that year. Some time after that it became Teeter's Flats, an apartment Building which was later destroyed in a controlled burn by firemen.
The Jesse James - Younger gang fled from Northfield, Minnesota after a failed bank robbery. Young Sorbel recognized the gang as they passed his Hanska farm. Bob, Cole and Jim Younger would eventually surrender to this seven-man posse 8 miles west of Madelia on the banks of the Watonwan River. Charlie Pitts died in the shootout.

Long time harness maker and dealer George Hartung operated this store. He is pictured on the left. His business was located at 708 First Avenue South St. James, MN. Will become Sam's Electric in fall of 1977.

The tower which Mr. Joseph Flanders is building for the wind engine at his big well is nearing completion. It stands on a solid foundation and the super structure will be sixty-four feet high.

Buildings depicted include the St. James High School, the creamery and the Watonwan County Courthouse. There is an early image of the Mount Hope Cemetery. Also included are a number of images documenting the activities of the members of the local Grand Army of the Republic Post and Drum Corps.

Exterior view of First Lutheran Church of St. James before 1909. It was on the corner of 8th Street and 4th Avenue South facing west. This building was torn down in order to build a new church nearby.
The St. James Hospital and Sanitarium and Hospital. Treatments offered are electric vibration, thermolite hydrotherapy, vapor cabinet, electric cabinet, massage and Swedish movements. The physician is Dr. Beckstrom who is a naturopathic physician. The hospital and sanitarium are operated by the Department of Natural Methods in St. James, Minnesota.
Exterior view of the Sveadahl Store in Sveadahl. C.A. Holmquist. The store is no longer in existence. It was built in 1894 by Nels Nelson and sold the usual fare as well as serving as a locker plant. The store closed in 1967.

Small town of Sveadahl looking north. The Creamery is in the grove. Ida Anderson's house with the chimney sticking out. Blacksmith shop is the little building sticking out past the barn. Two church barns used to house horses during church and church is on the right bottom front.
Ashippun Post Office was the first in Watonwan County. It was built in 1857 and was located on Watonwan River's south branch in Rosedale Township. In 1925 it was moved to the City Park in Madelia by the local chapter of the D.A.R.
