Sister Olivia Egan entered St. Benedict's community in 1886, graduated from St. Benedict's Academy, taught in the Industrial School and then became librarian and teacher at the academy and the college. In the college, she served as librarian from 1916-1930. Because of her vital interest in the establishment of the college, Sister Mariella Gable cited her as one of its prime promoters.
Sister Madeleine Lyons, who served in various positions at four hospitals, was an excellent example of the contributions of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in the health care industry. A the time of her death, one newspaper reported, "Her death symbolized the passing of a true spirit of the service of sisterhood in nursing.Young girls entering the period of hospital training looked to her for guidance and saw the image of sacrifice and loving care they wished to emulate."

Sister Grace McDonald contributed an immeasurably important service to the community in gathering and researching the materials that led to her publishing the story of the first 100 years of the community. Without her notes and the materials she collected over a period of many years, the archives would not have the records of the community's development that it now enjoys. Though she kept no administrative files as an archivist, she is considered the first community archivist (from 1933 to 1963) because of her role as collector, researcher and writer.
First 50 years of the College of Saint Benedict (CSB) The performances Sister Dominica Borgerding directed would cram this hall and the two adjoining classrooms with seculars paying for tickets three Sundays in a row - from as far as the Twin Cities, Duluth and Milwaukee. She did not offer "milk for babes." Instead she challenged the Dramatics Club and the audiences with the "Merchant of Venice" (with a brilliant Shylock and a magnificent Portia) and with biblical plays of a Queen Esther and a Judith of Bethulia. Women took men's parts and managed very convincingly. If Shakespeare could make-do with men to take women's parts, Sister Dominica turned her women into men for their parts. The costumes were magnificent. They are still among the richest and most beautiful now in that amazing collection in the Benedicts Arts Center.
Sister Antonia McHugh had experience at three educational levels: elementary, secondary, and college. She was among the first faculty appointed to Derham Hall / College of St. Catherine in 1905. From 1914-1917 she served as the first dean of the college; from 1917-1937 she served as the first president of the college. Her work brought national and international recognition of the scholastic curriculum and faculty at the college.
Isle Royale, a part of the state of Michigan, is located just off the Minnesota North Shore of Lake Superior with a historical population of Minnesota residents.

The grocery store of Schmalzbauer and Zamor, located on Front Street in the old Transit House building, was operated by Frank (Shorty) Zamor and Anton (Buff) Schmalzbauer, brothers-in law.

First 50 years of the College of Saint Benedict (CSB). Hall&qOn the third floor, and the fourth, are located the private rooms of the students. Those on third floor open out into a beautiful rotunda; those on the fourth, into a balcony above the rotunda made pleasant and bright through the use of a very large and beautiful skylight. The rotunda is furnished with davenports, comfortable chairs, library tables and a piano. (The next bulletin included a radio and an orthophonic victrola.) The rotunda is the recreation room of the college students" (College Bulletin, 1926).
Children of varying ages sit on the steps outside of the Jewish Sheltering Home. An unidentified man and woman sit to either side of the children. The Sheltering Home was a community resource dedicated to providing a stable, Jewish environment for Jewish children unable to live with their families. Residency was for the most part short term, with children staying until a sick parent recovered, or a child could be taken in by a member of an extended family. the children attended public school, and went to Talmud Torah after school. The St. Paul community also provided support for the home.

Mrs. Louis Rubenstein posed for this portrait during the annual fundraiser. The woman selling the most tickets was named queen of the bazaar. Beth El Congregation was composed of younger members of the North Side Jewish community who were interested in reviving certain aspects of religious expression, including Torah study (in English) and Friday evening Shabbat services.

Harry Goldie had an interesting career, which included amateur boxing, coaching, and real estate development. He spearheaded the creation of the Calhoun Beach Club. While the club was chartered in 1928 and building began in 1929, financing for it foundered during the Depression, and it didn't officially open until 1946. Goldie's dream for the club entailed an egalitarian social and athletic space that would welcome members regardless of race, religion or sex.

Clarence Magney is better known as a judge than a mayor. Born January 11, 1883 in Wisconsin, he was a successful lawyer until his election as Duluth mayor in 1917. During his stint as mayor, Magney worked to preserve and increase Duluth's parkland and parkways. He resigned from this office on September 15, 1920 in order to take a post as judge of the District Court, where he served for 23 years. He then served as associate justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court from 1943-1953. He died on May 15, 1962, leaving behind his wife Lillian and their three children.

This album features 76 pages of photographs taken in the 1920s of the work and social life at the Saint Peter State Hospital, in Saint Peter, Minnesota. For example, nurses work in the women's sick room on the second floor of the original hospital building (page 7), the men's sick room on the third floor (page 42), and in the hospital library (page 9). Staff members administer anesthetic to patients (page 16, page 50). Other facilities include a shoe repair shop and steward's office (page 38), laundry building (page 30), diet kitchen (page 32), gymnasium (page 32), and the South Detached Ward for women patients (page 65). August Palmer, who worked at the hospital for 54 years, is the man on the right at a large desk on page 21 and on page 26 and is the third man from the left in the upper left photo on page 42.
