The W. M. Nutting house was located between the Union Street and the Third Street East. The sketch shows the front side of the house. The Nutting family has been associated with Carleton College since its founding. John C. Nutting was a trustee of the College, and through his leadership of the First National Bank, provided a strong link between Carleton and Northfield. The Nutting House was built in 1888 for the family of John Claudius and Calista (Morse) Nutting, and was given to Carleton College in 1970 by their granddaughters. Contemporary newspaper reports referred to the house as "one of the finest in the city." It was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 due to its status as the only remaining example of a brick home of this size and period in Northfield, and as a well-known landmark in the community because of the high regard in which the Nutting Family was held. With an exterior faced in cream brick trimmed with red sandstone, beveled glass and stained glass in various windows, gingerbread-style porches, pocket doors, and extensive use of various hard and soft woods throughout the interior of the 20-room home, it has long been regarded as a treasure in Northfield. This was Ely's second modern hospital, the first being the Tanner Hospital. The Shipman Hospital was torn down in 1958 to make room for the "new" Ely Clinic.
This Greek Revival-style building became the permanent home of the American Fraternal Union in 1933. Founded and incorporated on July 18, 1898, the offices were in two previous locations before this building was constructed. The office closed in 2012 and the home office was moved to St. Paul, Minnesota.
Post Card No. 60761, printed in Germany, shows what is today called the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center or the St. Peter State Hospital. The following message was addressed to Miss Nathalie Asp, 18 E. 3rd St., Duluth, Minn: "Dear friend-- Don't know if you have a path like this or not-- Don't keep Jennie to [sic.] long, as we are getting lonesome for her. Am going up to see Nannie this evening. Lovingly, Mrs. H. B."
