Exterior view of former YMCA building, it opened in 1916 at southeast corner of Lake Avenue and Second Street. Ward Ames and Julius Barnes, both men were central figures in the grain trade, gave this building for the YMCA in memory of Ames' father Wardwell Ames.

The Duluth Curling Club was built at 1338 London Road in 1912-1913. The dedication included a game on February 22, 1913. It was a facility for roller and speed skating as well as ice skating and hockey. The facility was closed to use by 1979. It was slated for rehabilitation and reuse but burned by an arsonist June 3, 1984.

Marshall-Wells Hardware merchandise is loaded and ready for delivery to various railroad lines for transport. The first horse-drawn sleigh will take the orders packed into it to the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha depot. The truck behind the sleigh is destined for the Soo Line depot. The next in line will be shipped on the Great Northern railway and the one after that will go to the Northern Pacific. The Union Depot served seven railroads including the GN and NP. It still stands as the St. Louis County Heritage and Arts Center. All of the other depots are gone. The Marshall-Wells Company started in 1886 as Chapin and Wells Company a wholesale hardware business. Albert Morley Marshall, son of Seth, bought controlling interest in 1893 and changed the name to Marshall-Wells Company. The company grew to include 14 wholesale offices throughout the northwestern U.S. and Canada. In 1955 Ambrook Industries Inc. of New York bought controlling interest. Kelley-How-Thomson and Marshall-Wells merged January 1, 1958. Kelley-How-Thomson had been a subsidiary of Marshall-Wells since 1955 when Ambrook bought Marshall-Wells and reorganized. The Coast-to-Coast Stores bought the Duluth division of Marshall-Wells-Kelley-How-Thomson Company in 1958, which ended the Duluth firm's operation. Also in the image are the People's Hotel 246 Lake Avenue South, and the Lyceum Theater billboard.

The Nelson Building, 5628 Grand Avenue, at the intersection of Grand Avenue, Ramsey Street and Fifty Seventh Avenue West, first appears in the Duluth City Directory in 1917.

National Iron Company was at Fiftieth Avenue West and Ramsey Street. From 1898, it designed and manufactured heavy machinery and structural steel. It employed 190 workers in 1916 with a payroll of $96,000.

This West Duluth Street view at Central Avenue and Bristol street shows the building where the Purity Store operated as well as other business signs. It is an example of Romanesque architecture. The view includes men, boys, children, a truck, snow. It is a winter view of the business district. The building was constructed in 1889, and it was razed in 1976. Note the fire escape.

The sculpted details are at the entrance of the Palladio building in downtown Duluth at the corner of Fourth Avenue West and Superior Street. Northwestern Fuel sold coal, coke, and wood from their office at 403 West Superior Street. The 1889 Palladio Building architect was Henry Raeder of Raeder, Coffin and Crocker.

Hugh McKenzie was a principal Duluth photographer. McKenzie's studio was in this Seip Building or Smith Building 101 West Superior on the northwest corner. It was the last frame building in the main business district on Superior Street when it was torn down in 1926.

The Duluth Chamber of Commerce supplied offices for like minded organizations. The gentleman is Hubert V. Eva, secretary of the Commercial Club. In 1880 the Duluth Chamber of Commerce was organized. In 1889 records of organization were destroyed in a fire. In 1893, the City of Duluth withdrew funds causing the collapse of the Chamber organization. In 1902, it reorganized as the Duluth Commercial Club. In 1930, it again became organized as the Duluth Chamber of Commerce.

The weekly newspaper Labor World was founded by Sabrie Akin in 1896. Akin served as the publisher until her death in 1900. Plumber William McEwen bought the paper in 1900 and continued as the owner and publisher until his death in 1933. This photograph shows Labor World staff in their office in Duluth's Manhattan Building, 410-416 West Superior Street. Still in existence, Labor World is currently published by Duluth AFL-CIO Central Labor Body.

Freimuth's was at the corner of Lake Avenue and West Superior Street. In 1900 the address of the dry goods store of Ignatz Freimuth was given as 2-10 West Superior Street. It was razed May, 1968.

The Henry Raeder designed, five-story, Palladio office building was built at 401 West Superior Street in 1889. Raeder's firm was Raeder, Coffin and Crocker. The top floors were removed in 1937 reducing it to two stories. The top was rebuilt to three stories in 1938 for WEBC. The building still stands.

Workers during the Christmas season include Clarence C. Bartholomew and Bessie Crasweller behind the counter at the left. The George A. Gray Company evolved. It was the Huntington and Tallant "The New Store" in 1900 with S. W. Huntington, Frank E. Tallant. It was Hendren and Tallant Company, dry goods, in 1901 with William T. Hendren. It was Gray and Tallant Company, department store, in 1902, followed by George A. Gray Company in 1911. Finally it was the Edward F. Wahl Company in 1937. Wahl's went out of business in 1986. Tallant in 1910.

These are the unidentified men and boys who worked for the Stevens Tug Line. Mr. Darwin E. Stevens' fleet was located at the foot of Twenty-first Avenue West in the Duluth harbor. The Joe D. Dudley tug is at the far left, the Mystic is next, and the Minni Karl is at the far right. The Cupid and the Henry T. Brower are not in this shot.

The $350,000 Spalding Hotel was built in 1887 at Fifth Avenue West and Superior Street. It opened in 1889, closed in the early 1960s and was razed in 1963.
