This aerial view is one of many taken by Wayne Gatlin. Canal Park (under the jet) is in its transformative stage moving from a light industrial site to a tourist destination. Grandma's Saloon and Grill has its striped canvas tent up with the ice cream railroad car in place. The double-decker red bus is at the intersection of Morse and South First Avenue East or Canal Park Drive. The first segment of the Lakewalk will be built in 1988. Duluth-born Mr. Gatlin enlisted in the aviation cadet program in 1942. Later he flew 55 combat missions for the 360th Fighter Group in England and downed an ME-262 jet fighter. In 1948 he joined the Texas Air National Guard but eventually transferred to Duluth, where he became operations officer for the 179th Fighter Interceptor Squadron. Gatlin flew jet fighters while stationed at Duluth during the Korean War. He was the high individual scorer at the 1954, 1955 and 1956 National Air Guard gunnery meets. Gatlin served as commander of the Air Technician Detachment at Duluth, wing commander, group commander and finally chief of staff for the Minnesota Air National Guard. He logged over 6,700 military flying hours during his career. Gatlin studied photography over the years and his marvelous portraits of Guard aircraft have appeared in many publications and journals.

This board includes individual portraits of students from St. Cloud School of Nursing, Class of 1982 and Director Sister Mary Jude Meyer, O.S.B. Between the years 1967 and 1986, the term 'hospital' was dropped from the school's name. The photographs are color prints mounted on grey paper board, with identifications hand lettered in black ink. The first training school for nurses in St. Cloud, Minnesota, opened at St. Raphael's Hospital (predecessor to St. Cloud Hospital) in September 1908, one year after the state legislature mandated that all nurses working in Minnesota hospitals be licensed. As did the hospital, the education program operated under the auspices of the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minnesota. From its inception until it closed in 1987, the school was conducted as a three-year diploma program that blended academic and practical training for the nursing profession. In 1964, the school began admitting male and married students. The large format photo composite boards were first created in 1958 by two graduates of the school, Lidwina Kray and Marian Town, as part of the St. Cloud Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association celebration of the school's 50th anniversary. The boards were displayed in a book-like frame that allowed viewers to page through the history of the school's students. Each year following, graduating classes added their portraits to the 'book.' There are 50 boards in all.

Exterior view of the Champlin Branch. Library service has been available to Champlin-area residents since the early 1900s. For most of the 20th century, library service was provided in a variety of small community locations.

Exterior view of the Hopkins Branch Library. Library service to the Hopkins community was established more than 100 years ago, when the library was housed in City Hall. The library moved to the historic Dow House in 1948 and then temporarily to a vacant restaurant in 1963. The library opened in its current location in 1968 and was renovated in 2002. The Hopkins Library merged with the Hennepin County Library system in 1973.

Library service to the Long Lake community in western Hennepin County began in 1913, when the library was housed out of the Long Lake Bank Building. The library merged with the Hennepin County Library system in 1922. For several decades, the library operated out of various locations in the community, until it settled in a commercial storefront space in the Long Lake Town Center Mall in 1995.
