27. Commencement Spotlight, Volume 4, Number 9, Lincoln High School, Esko's Corner, Minnesota

Description:: Lila Johnson was the Valedictorian and Ellen Suominen was the Salutatorian of their classes, and their respective speeches were printed in the paper. The commencement program was detailed, as was the baccalaureate sermon, given by Superintendent A. L. Winterquist. There was a small photo of the seniors, as well as their class history and a Who's Who of the Senior class listed with the organizations in which they participated by year. A Luther League meeting and program was announced. Also included was a senior class will and prophesy section. The 4-H Club presented a three act comedy play. There was 4-H Club Achievement Day in Cloquet. The senior class hall of fame was listed. Basketball players were given awards such as sweaters and letters. The seniors were entertained at a banquet given at the Winterquist's home, by the Winterquists, with a meal, games, and contests. The seniors motored to Cloquet to have their photos taken at a studio. Members of the Lincoln School orchestra were listed along with the instruments they played. George Kivisto won honors at an invitational track meet held at Cloquet, winning first place in the discus throw and setting a new record, as well as winning third place in shot-put. Seniors were honored at a banquet put on by the juniors. The girls' volleyball and indoor baseball tournaments were held at Lincoln School. A boys' and girls' track tournament was held at Barnum. Boys' track members attended an invitational meet at Cloquetd. Girls who participated in spring sports were named. There were advertisements by the following businesses: Juntti Bros.; Arrowhead Cooperative Creamery; and Cloquet Cooperative Society.

Description:: This Christmas Cheer edition details the Forbay School Christmas program as well as those of Lincoln and Washington Schools. The high school students were set to have a Christmas program with presents given out. The English Lutheran Sunday School was scheduled to give a Christmas program at the Lincoln School, and the selections were specified. The community play was scheduled. The Cloquet Junior High Y Team beat Lincoln high in basketball. The Cloquet Scouts beat the Lincoln High basketball team. The game with Meadowlands was cancelled due to a two day snowstorm. Heavy snows made roads impassable for the north motor bus riders, so they had to ride in the horse busses for two hours, morning and night, with classes and noon recess times shortened.

Description:: This unusual edition has a first page which is declared to an Extra and is devoted to promoting the musical comedy and operetta entitled Love Pirates of Hawaii to be given by Lincoln students. Presumably it is in 0connection with Valentine's Day, which was celebrated at the schools by the distribution of Valentines Day Cards in all the classes. The second page, which seemed to be the main part of the newsletter, consisted of detailed accounts of sports; the establishment of a sub-district tournament boys basketball teams of Cromwell, Floodwood, Willow River, and Lincoln; the standing of the sub-district basketball teams; Lincoln girls basketball teams over Carlton, while the boys basketball team lost to Carlton; and the Lincoln juniors beating the Cloquet West End YMCA basketball team. A sad item announced the death of nine year old student Fred Sota to pneumonia, having had it only for five days. Also included was a literary section.

Description:: A victory celebration and awarding of prizes to the team selling the most magazine subscriptions was held at an assembly program. The honor roll was announced. The English III Club wrote a book, entitled, "Bits of Inspiration," and gave it to the library. Alumni were invited to subscribe to the Spotlight at the cost of four cents a copy. Freshmen and new teachers were initiated at a party. Candy sales were hosted at noon by the Girls' Glee Club to buy costumes for an operetta they planned to stage. The Arrowhead Aces and high school girls' basketball teams practiced, as did the high school boys' basketball team. The last two pages of the newsletter were devoted to a report of the athletic funds of both the 1925-1926 school year as well as the 1926-1927 school year, with considerable breakdowns of income and expenses for both girls and boys sports.

Description:: Highlighting this edition is a story of the success of the opening of a Cloquet Co-Operative Store at Esko's Corner. Lincoln students competed in the essay contest on Consumers' Cooperatives. A Luther League business meeting, program, lunch, and community sing-a-long and games was held at the school. Seniors were in charge of a freshmen initiation party. Mr. Street, State Inspector, visited the all the grades and modern history classes. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist attended the Eighth District State High School Athletic Association meeting held in Duluth, along with representatives of Duluth high schools, Morgan Park, Two Harbors, Cloquet, Lincoln, Carlton, Moose Lake, and Barnum teams. The French II class was still corresponding with their French pen pals. The Arrowhead Aces girls' basketball team practice had begun, as had the Arrowhead boys' basketball team's practice. Description:: Lincoln High School met state standards for official accreditation and was placed on the state high school listing. The Luther League gave a reception and program for teachers, concluded by a community sing-a-long. Four vandals and thieves broke into Lincoln School and stole a small amount of change from the office and library. The twenty four member Girls' Glee Club was organized and officers elected. The Cloquet Cooperative Association offered $150 in prizes for the five best essays written on the topic of Consumer Cooperation, with the essay contest being open to Cloquet and Lincoln High School students. Students took part in a magazine subscription contest after seeing salesmanship lessons presented by two salesmen from the Curtis Publishing Company. An election was promoted, with candidates, to be held for Spotlight staff. Both Howard Anderson and Edna Esko represented Lincoln School at the State Fair. Edna Esko took first prize, the highest prize taken by anybody from Lincoln to this date. Walter Johnson took second prize in the Calf Club exhibit at the Barnum Fair.

An interesting article was written on the growth of Esko's Corner over the previous fifty years, with mention of a one room schoolhouse, Hjalmer Mattinen's Store, a blacksmith shop, Arrowhead Creamery, a garage, a shoemaker's shop, and two new homes. Scarlet fever ravaged the area, as evidenced by an article reporting on Anna Norman, the county nurse, and Superintendent A. L. Winterquist visiting houses to check for Scarlet Fever and to quarantine as many houses as needed.

Seven motion pictures were to be shown on Friday nights at Lincoln School and Saturday nights at the Washington School, given by the Luther League and the Calf Club. Adoption matters entered into the news when Miss Johnson as a representative of the State Board of Control visited Lincoln School to censure Town of Thompson [sic.] records. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist attended two national conventions in Boston, including the National Conference of the Department of Rural Education and the National Conference of Superintendents. The active Bread Club started their yearly work. English III students, who were juniors, organized their English III Club. Representatives from the Duluth Teachers' College visited Lincoln School and spoke to the students about entering Normal School. The first advertisement in the newsletter was for the Johnson Bros. Ready To Wear Store in Cloquet. The Lincoln girls' basketball team lost to the Proctor girls' basketball team.

Mr. Jensen from Dassel, Minnesota, who was known as the Bird Man because of his knowledge of all things avian, lectured on birds. Violin lessons were offered to Lincoln students, courtesy of Mr. Moody. He offered to have one of his student teachers come to Lincoln School to give either class or private lessons. A high school band was organized, with twelve students. In 4-H Club activities, the Town of Thomson Club named those who won honors and elected officers among the total 51 members. One article was written in Finnish: "Arvoisat Kansalaiset." Subscriptions were sought to the Spotlight at the cost of fifty cents a year for the monthly edition. There were many absences due to boys staying home to dig potatoes. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist gave a speech over the radio at Superior about the Arrowhead Cooperative Creamery. In seventh and eighth grade news, music twas taught by Miss Lindquist three days a week and by Miss Radabaugh on two days. The first snow last year was noted to have occurred on September 25th, while this year it was September 24th. There were advertisements from the following businesses: Juntti Bros. The high school track team was preparing for the District Track Meet to be held at Cloquet. An article by student Clarence Carlson about the FFA was given. William Wainio and Ray Maki wrote an article about their trip to the North East Experiment Station. Washington School, junior high school, 4-H news, and GAA news was given, including the first outing of the GAA to Hay Creek for a cheese and bacon roast. In FFA news, Thomsomites were on the potato show committee, who decided to hold the grain and potato show at the Cloquet Civic Center. A traveling musician, Orsen Sime, entertained at Lincoln School, with novelty musical instruments. The busy band season included the band playing during the past summer at a variety of places to raise money for their trip to compete at the State Fair. To save money they slept in tents set up on the camp grounds, warmed by straw bales. The PTA ladies made all their food.

Description:: The blind orchestra from the Duluth Lighthouse for the Blind was judged to be the best act of the third annual GAA variety show. The school band, under direction of L. B. Olson, played at the Sixth Annual Northeastern Minnesota Junior Livestock Show. The band paraded from the Duluth City Hall at Fifth Avenue West, to London Road, and to the Curling Club. The junior class enjoyed an outing to a log cabin at Jay Cooke Park. New library helpers, called pages, started work. The band entertained at the Arrowhead Cooperative Creamery meeting. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist wrote about safety in an article titled, "The Matter of Life and Death." Junior high school news was given, including a note about many students being absent because of the busy potato picking season. The Thomson Townships Farmers' Club met. The junior and senior bands were organized, with officers being elected. Community news items were given about the comings and goings of Township residents. The junior football team was defeated by the senior team. Candidates for the boys basketball team had a physical examination, prior to the start of basketball practice.

Description:: An attorney from Cloquet was the guest speaker at the Armistice Day program. Thomson student Beatrice Lehto played several accordion solos on the radio broadcast of the Finnish Program sponsored by Occident Flour. Mildred Bergstedt was selected by the state 4-H club leader to give a talk about 4-H Clubs on radio station WEBC. The PTA Chorus presented Mrs. Hale of the Denfeld High School to give a lecture at the Lincoln about her year in Finland. Student Harry Osvald returned to Lincoln to complete his senior year of high school after spending six months in the CCC at Gooseberry Falls, where he served as editor of the twenty-page CCC monthly paper, "The Gitchi Gummi Undertow." Superintendent A. L Winterquist wrote an editorial about the high school pupil. There was an "In Memoriam" to Andrew E. Jarvi. In eighth grade school news, Alice Klemo couldn't attend school because of illness in her family that necessitated her entire family being quarantined for six weeks. The Esko Bears made a trip to Elde's Corner to trounce the All Stars from Elde's Corner in football. The English Lutheran Sunday School, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the church, presented an anniversary program at the Lincoln School. Among the various community news items was a story about Mr. H. J. Mattinen, local postmaster, telling about a new mail service from Duluth and Cloquet, bringing the total number of deliveries a day of mail to Esko to six. Mr. and Mrs. L. B. Olson held a dinner party at their home for the Latin classes. News was given for 4-H as well as the Future Farmers, who attended the first annual Future Farmers banquet of the district number 7 at Eveleth. The vocational agricultural students made a field trip to the Carlton County Potato and Grain Show at Cloquet, and exhibited there. At the monthly meeting of the Thomson Township Farmers' Club officers were elected, and plans for the annual Club banquet were made. Among musical selections were a number of selections by the Nopeming Finnish Choir directed by Isaac Esko. Twenty six Thomson Township young men attended the organization of part-time educational classes at the Lincoln School. The members of the Thomson Tommies basketball team were discussed, and the 1937-1938 basketball schedule was listed.

In Washington school news items an article noted that Washington grade children were brushing their teeth with toothpaste sent by Kolynos Company to the students. Community news items were given, one of which noted that one of the oldest settlers here, Mr. Emanuel Himango, died at his home. Basketball practice started for the Thomson Tommies, with inter-mural football games were played. The Red Cross organization was the theme of the monthly PTA meeting.

A junior high assembly focused on thrift. In basketball, Thomson beat Floodwood as well as Grand Marais, but Carlton and Moose Lake beat Thomson. In FFA news, an FFA library was established. The FFA sponsored a Finnish movie, with proceeds to be divided between the FFA Chapter and the Finnish Benefit Fund at the Lincoln School. FFA boys worked on speeches for the public speaking contest. The Esko FFA chapter published the district news letter.

Health examinations for both students and staff focused on tuberculosis detection. An article promoted the Boy Scouts. A double quintet was formed from the Girls' Glee Club to sing at the junior class play. A school bus patrol was organized, with bus routes being assigned. Student Helmi Kivisto thanked fellow sophomore students for letters and a Bible received while she was at Ah-Gwah Ching Sanatorium being treated for tuberculosis. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist wrote about transportation insurance. The Owls' Club elected officers. A page was devoted to FFA news, which included news about the national FFA convention and an invitation to FFA graduates to attend meetings. The GAA girls hiked to Cloquet. Despite cold weather, the girls practiced baseball outside. The Thomson Tommies football team reported to practices. A group of boys from Esko went to Jay Cooke Park to play football with Brownell boys, who came a week later to play at Esko.

Description:: Free physical examinations for all staff and students showed that one-third of students had one or more of the following defects: bad teeth, defective tonsils, enlarged thyroid glands, and poor eyesight. Thomson Township schools organized bus patrols to add to safety, by the patrols assisting the bus drivers maintain discipline, flagging buses across railroad tracks, and directing pupils as they crossed roads. An Armistice Day program was scheduled. In addition to an article promoting the Boy Scouts, the township's first Boy Scout Troop was organized. Evening courses were offered in typewriting at Lincoln School. The Girls' Glee Club, directed by Isaac Esko, sang over radio station WEBC. Superintendent A. L. The Pep Band prepared to play for all home basketball games. The Polar Bear League Conference set the admission price to conference games at twenty-five cents for adults and ten cents for students. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist wrote an article promoting the American Red Cross. A page was given to Boy Scout Activities. A letter about life at the Gillette Hospital from Helen Knuti was printed. Aides were chosen for the Owls' Club. PTA delegates reported on the state convention at their meeting. Twenty one Esko FFA boys attended the annual district banquet. The Esko FFA chapter participated for the first time in the Seventh District Future Farmer Chapter Conducting Contest, about parliamentary procedure. The Thomson Tommies played Duluth Central Trojans in basketball. The A squad got new suits.

Description:: Sports highlights were featured, as the Tommies beat Meadowlands and went up against Cromwell in the basketball semi-finals. A representative of the Cloquet branch of the Bell Telephone Company presented two movies about telephone usage. The sophomore and senior agriculture classes attended a potato meting at Carlton. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist editorialized about high schools being too much like college preparatory schools. Books about Finland were added to the school library. Nearly 500 people attended a mass meeting held at the Lincoln School to discuss the Finnish situation, with Onnie Laine, Finnish radio commentator over radio station WEBC, being the main speaker. Donations made for lunch amounted to $156.00. Plans were made for another house-to-house canvas for funds to be sent directly to the Finnish government rather than the Red Cross. The Boy Scouts took a ski hike to a ski slide, then to the railroad, to Sippas Hill and down it, and then followed an old Native American trail to the Boy Scout camping grounds. The investiture ceremony for the new Boy Scout Troop 197 was held at the Thomson Township PTA meeting. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist, Mr. Hauge, and Mr. Esko attended a meeting at Two Harbors to plan for the music festival to be held there this spring. The Thomson Tommies basketball team beat Cromwell, but the Carlton Bulldogs basketball team beat the Tommies.

Description:: Christmas programs were highlighted, including the PTA's program, the junior high program, and the grade school's Christmas operetta. The industrial training department made ornaments to be sold, with the proceeds turned over to the Finnish Relief. Fred Hendrickson had two more hours of flying lessons before he could fly solo. Special Christmas greetings were extended to students Helmi Kivisto and Walter Johnson. Superintendent A. L. Winterquist wrote about Christmas, and how this particular Christmas the world was suffering from war, hatred, jealousy, and fear. The Industrial Arts Department had a page with their news items. Both the shop classes and the home economics classes made Christmas gifts. The junior high organized a Junior Red Cross unit in each homeroom and worked on filling Christmas baskets. GAA news was given as well as Boy Scout news. In 4-H news items, it was noted that the 4-H Club decided to sell bars at the FFA basketball game and donate the proceeds to the Finnish Relief. The club voted to send records of their meetings to the Duluth News Tribune and Herald. The Esko FFA chapter edited the third volume of the District FFA Newsletter, with typing and mimeographing done by the commercial classes at Esko. Three FFA boys and their instructor, Mr. Fischer, went to Cook, Minnesota to purchase 200 pounds of seed for the FFA farm practice program from the Arrowhead Seed Growers Association. The Esko FFA basketball team beat the Aurora Black Hawks in a benefit game at the Lincoln gymnasium, with the proceeds from the game given to the Finnish Red cross. The Thomson Township Tommies beat the Wrenshall Wrens in basketball, and remained undefeated in the Polar Bear League.

The 4-H Carlton County rally was scheduled to be at Moose Lake. The 4-H Clubs and FFA had a variety show at the Lincoln School. In basketball the Thomson Alumni beat the high school team.
