Crowd of people are gathered around the Agate Bay Hotel (1924-1974) construction site for the laying of the cornerstone. American Legion Post 109 placed the cornerstone.

A Grist Mill once stood where the present city of Anoka is currently located. This was on the east bank of the Rum River on the north side of the Main Street bridge.

Forest L. Pinney, one of the early settlers of the state, came to Minnesota in 1856 and located himself at Monticello and Anoka where he worked as a surveyor.
These boats were towed upstream to the furthest point of the logging operation and then floated downstream as the timber crews worked the logs down the river. This practice kept the bunkhouse and cook shanties close to where the men were working.

Misidentified as the first boat load of rails as the Ossifrage was not built until 1886 and the coal docks were not built until 1888. Therefore this photo dates to around 1889.

Before road improvements in the 1920s, a combination of dogsleds, steam ships, sail boats, and sleighs were used to deliver mail to settlements north of Two Harbors. Working in pairs, contracted carriers would make the perilous journey twice weekly.
