Logs were shipped by rail from northern Minnesota to Stillwater and made into rafts. They were then floated down the St. Croix and Mississippi Rivers. The rafts usually consisted of 8 to 10 strings of logs fastened side by side, each string measuring 16 across and about 400 feet long. Some of these enormous rafts stretched 4 or 5 acres in size.
Lumber was rafted downstream from Stillwater. Boards were arranged in cribs or heavy crates, each 16 feet wide and 32 feet long. A lumber raft might contain as many as 200 cribs.
At the boom, floating timbers chained between piers caught and contained logs for sorting and measuring and rigging into rafts. At one time, the Stillwater boom extended a distance of 9 miles and employed 400 men to sort, scale and raft timber.

Bird's-eye view taken from Church Hill of Lanesboro power dam built over the Root River in 1868. It was constructed on a foundation of solid stone and anchored at each side by rock bluffs. The banks of the Zumbro River are spanned by a bridge at Oronoco. This bridge, built about 1876, was the second bridge at this location and was later replaced by a concrete bridge in 1918.
View is to the north from the Northern Pacific Railway bridge. The U.S. Government dredge "Unser Fritz" is moored in the middle of the Red River. Mud scows float just beyond. In the distance the Alsop Line's steamboat "Pluck" and two barges are tied up to the Fargo, Dakota Territory river bank just below the Grandin Line's grain elevator A. In the far distance is Fargo's Union Elevator. In the foreground at left can be seen a temporary wagon bridge; in the distance at right is Moorhead's Point neighborhood.

Cover of the book "Views on the Upper Mississippi." Inscribed on the front cover: "Presented to U.S. Dredge, William A. Thompson by Mrs. William A. Thompson." This volume contains cyanotype images dipicting views of the Upper Mississippi River District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' projects by Henry Peter Bosse. Bosse (1844-1903) was a draughtsman employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, where he worked in the St. Paul office (1874-1878). During his career he assisted with the mapping of the upper Mississippi River from the Falls of St. Anthony in Minneapolis, Minnesota to the confluence of the Illinois River with the Mississippi River, 25 miles upstream of St. Louis, Missouri.
Landscape view; the view checked on the reverse of the card is: "View of Stone Arch Bridge." the bridge was completed in 1881-1884. The view might be from Hennepin Island. This bridge was built for the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railroad; James J. Hill's originally constructed the bridge with 20 catenary's arches.
