This is the West Duluth plant of the Zenith Furnace Company. West Duluth is a neighborhood of Duluth. Captain August B. Wolvin bought the aging blast furnace at this Fifty-seventh Avenue West location, modernized it and organized Zenith Furnace to operate it. It produced pig iron. It was incorporated in 1902. The plant produced 175 tons of product in 24 hours. In one month in 1916, a record of 310 tons of pig iron was produced in 24 hours. The site covers 80 acres and includes a coal dock. Coal gas, ammonia, and coal tar are by-products. It employed 350 men with a payroll of $35,000 a month in 1916.

The Fremad Association, incorporated in 1874, was a major Pope County department store growing out of the Wollan family store at White Bear Center (1870), later Wollan Bros. store at Glenwood (1872). The corner portion of this building was built in 1893 with an addition to the north (right in photo) before 1900. The upper level had professional offices and a community hall.
St. Peter's first high school is shown in the center of this photograph. The railroad bridge is the one that crossed the Minnesota River near the St. Peter State Hospital. The other bridge is the vehicular bridge across the river at Broadway. The building at the top and center is a bakery, but the other buildings have not been identified.

This post card was mailed in 1906, but the image is from an earlier year. In the 1890s commercial fishing on Lake Superior was feeding Duluth and the entire Midwest with major operators: A. Booth and Sons (whose sign is visible at the left), Lake Superior Fish Company, H. Christiansen and Sons.
