A brochure for Sophie Wirth Camp. Sophie Wirth Camp was founded in 1912 and sponsored by the St. Paul Section of the National Council of Jewish Women. Costs were kept down with N. C. J. W. subsidies, allowing low income children and their mothers a week of respite from heat and city life.

Passover Seders begin with a retelling of the story of the deliverance of the Jewish people from Egyptian bondage. It includes foods symbolic of the years of slavery and flight from Egypt. Seders are family and community observances, held primarily in the home. The Smith family lived in St. Paul on Dayton Avenue. Jennie Smith, the family matriarch, presides at the end of the table.

Turn of the century Jewish immigrants were closely associated with all aspects of the garment industry. While many worked in shirt-making factories located on the East Cost, others had tailoring skills they brought with them from Europe. They opened small shops in urban areas where customers could come to them for services.

Lyndale Auto Parts was located on the North Side. The scrap yard featured signs asking the public to donate their scrap metal to help with the war effort. This sign appeals to a civilian's sense of patriotism and urgency in aiding the war effort.

The Minnesota-Dakota Action Committee was organized by the Jewish Community Relations Council to help educate the public about the plight of Soviet Jews; to support efforts of Soviet Jews to immigrate to Israel; and to help sustain Jewish life in the Soviet Union. The organization was active in the national movement from the mid-1960s to the late 1980s, and highly successful in its efforts.

Programming for the J. E. C. was conducted by the J. C. A. A.--Jewish Center Activities Association, and funded by the Community Chest. J. C. A. A. was a programming powerhouse, quickly developing junior and senior orchestra's boy and girl scout troops, a theater company, adult classes and a newspaper. Summer Center Days showcased classes and cultural activities at the Center, and brought in new participants.

Friends and family raise a glass, at Sam Weiner's Bar Mitzvah. Bar Mitzvah literally means "Son of the Commandments." It refers to the boy (or with a Bat Mitzvah, girl) who comes of age at 13. it also refers to the ceremony celebrating the young persons call to read Torah. Participation at synagogues services is, and was, often followed by a celebration attended by family and friends.

Rose and Jay Phillips, the founder of Mount Sinai Hospital, are being checked in by an unknown volunteer wearing a clown costume at the Mount Sinai Hospital Women's Auxiliary Annual Ball, the biggest social event of the year. Mount Sinai Hospital was built in Minneapolis, Minnesota, during the 1950s to address the discrimination Jewish doctors experienced admitting Jewish patients to local hospitals. The Auxiliary members promoted the work of Mount Sinai Hospital and assisted needy members of the community through volunteer service, fundraising and public relations.

The Mirskey's store was located at 154 East Fairfield Avenue. The grocery served the neighborhood off of South Robert St. Although it is difficult to tell from the small scale, Fairfield was a busy commercial area with a mix of commercial buildings and private homes.

The Rockler Family sits around two long dining tables during Seder. The National Jewish Workers Alliance, also known as the Farband, was an early North American Zionist group. It was the mutual aid society of the political party Poale Zion. Farband members organized cooperative insurance and medical plans, adult education classes in Yiddish, and funded cooperative housing. The Minneapolis Farband house was located at 10th Street and Knox Avenue.

German Jews arrived in Minneapolis in the 1860s, followed by a large influx of Eastern European Jews in the 1880s. Children lay on individual mats on the floor during rest time in this pre-kindergarten class. The Jewish Educational Center was the precursor to the current St. Paul Jewish Community Center. It was built in 1930 at the corner of Holly and Grotto. Programming combined recreation and education, and by the time this picture was taken, over 100 community groups used the building.

Children attended public school, and went to Talmud Torah after school. The St. Paul community also provided support for the home.

Photograph of Rachel Calog sitting in a chair. Rachel Bella Calof is the author of "My Story", an autobiographical account to her marriage to Abraham Calof and their efforts to homestead and raise a family on the plains of North Dakota at the turn of the century. Despite desperate hardships, the Calof's raised nine children, and Rachel was a driving force in the establishment of the regional school district. After 23 years outside Devil's Lake, the Calofs moved to St. Paul in 1917. Rachel begin her autobiography in 1936, which she wrote in longhand. The manuscript was "discovered" in the American Jewish Archives in the early 1990s, and published in 1995 as "Rachel Calof's Story".

The multiplicity of Hebrew Schools in St. Paul was a marked difference from the centralized Hebrew instruction in Minneapolis, reflecting the diversity of the St. Paul community and it's lengthier history.

Portrait photograph of Rabbi Joseph Hurvitz and his wife, Rebbetzin Rae Hurvitz. Known in his St. Paul Lowertown community as "Der Roiter Rov" (the Red Rabbi), Rabbi Hurvitz lead the Sons of Jacob and Adath Yeshurun congregations from the 1910s through the 1950s. Though he was a traditionalist, he consciously used both English and Yiddish in worship and congregational gatherings to help validate his immigrant congregants sense that both languages and the cultures they represented were of equal importance in their new home.

Rabbi David Aronson, Senator Hubert Humphrey and Rabbi Kassel Abelson pose standing for the camera. Rabbis Kassel Abelson and David Aronson led the Beth El Synagogue congregation during the years it was located on Penn Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The photo with Senator Humphrey was taken at the Penn Avenue building. Aronson especially worked closely with Humphrey during Humphrey's tenure as Minneapolis mayor to improve North side inter-community relations during the late 1940s and early 50s.

A portrait photograph of Rabbi Albert Minda. Rabbi Minda succeeded Rabbi Samuel Deinard at Temple Israel after Deinard's death in 1921. Minda was a graduate of Hebrew Union Collage, and served Temple Israel until his retirement in 1963. Minda was an exceptional leader, presiding over the construction of a new synagogue in 1929, the founding of the Minneapolis Jewish Federation in 1949, the Minneapolis Urban League and The Minneapolis Roundtable of Christians and Jews. In Minnesota's Centennial year--1949--he was designated as one of the "Hundred Living Great [sic] of Minnesota."

Mrs. Louis Rubenstein posed for this portrait during the annual fundraiser. The woman selling the most tickets was named queen of the bazaar. Beth El Congregation was composed of younger members of the North Side Jewish community who were interested in reviving certain aspects of religious expression, including Torah study (in English) and Friday evening Shabbat services.

Purim is a time for acting out and speaking up. The women of Kenesseth Israel's auxiliary did just that, appropriating men's garb, including a tallis (prayer shawl) and a cigarette to declare a minute of breaking away from accepted roles and dressing conventions of the day.

A man wearing a heavy apron stained with ink (the printer) and a man wearing vest and tie (proprietor) stand outside the entrance to the printing shop. Schwartz Printing Shop was the first Jewish-owned print shop in Minneapolis. It was located at 240 4th Avenue South.

A price list from Steinberg Bag & Burlap Company. "Dealers in all kinds of Second-Hand Cotton Bags and Burlap." Formal businesses like Steinberg Bag and Burlap Company of Minneapolis emerged from the peddling and rag collecting businesses that some first generation Jews took up after immigrating to America.

It served as a recreation and education center, and by 1939 over 100 community groups, including Boy and Girl Scouts, a theater company, and two orchestras were using the facility.

Jonathan, Judy, and David Lebedoff stand behind a display of folded paper animals. Judy holds an instruction book on how to make the paper animals. Martin and Mary Lebedoff lived on the North Side of Minneapolis. The triplets were born in April of 1938.

A portrait of Robert Lazarus, who played violin with both the Chicago and Oakland (CA) Symphony Orchestras during the 1920s. After his professional playing career ended, he opened a violin repair shop in downtown St. Paul.

Portrait of Rabbi Dr. Nahum Schulman, rabbi of Mikro Kodesh Synagogue. In 1949, Mikro Kodesh of Minneapolis, Minnesota was the largest orthodox synagogue in the Twin Cities. By the late 1960, due to Jewish families emigrating to the neighboring Saint Louis Park, the synagogue merged with a conservative synagogue and later became B'nai Emet Synagogue of Saint Louis Park, Minnesota.

Portrait of Rabbi S. I. Levin, who served the congregations Sharei Tzedek Synagogue and Sharei Chesed Synagogue of Minneapolis, Minnesota for more than 63 years. He was the highly respected dean of Minneapolis Orthodox rabbis until his death in 1984. A prolific writer in scholarly Hebrew journals, he was one of the founders of the Minneapolis Federation and the Jewish Family and Children�s Service.

Rabbi Wechsler (pronounced Wexler) lead the congregation's sponsoring a Jewish farming settlement in the Dakota Territories. The settlement attempted to help Russian Jewish immigrants find livelihoods working the land in the American West. Though the farm colony ultimately failed, he was considered an innovator and modernizer. Late in his career, after leaving Minnesota, he worked to improve educational opportunities in Mississippi for blacks. He served at Temple Mount Zion from 1878-1886.

Portrait of Rabbi Albert G. Minda, rabbi of Temple Israel Synagogue in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was a president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis and a spiritual leader of Minneapolis Jews from 1922-1963. Additionally, he was co-founder of the Minneapolis Urban League and Round Table Conference of Christians and Jews.

Kafka became Sexton (custodian) of Temple Mount Zion in 1874. He was responsible for the care of the Temple, keeping the heat on, collecting contributions, and carrying out the directives of the congregation president. Whether the pay for his service was insufficient can only be conjectured, but Kafka left his job for a post on the St. Paul Police Force.

Portrait photograph of Ida Cook sitting in a chair. The Cook family, headed by Rabbi Isaac Cook and his wife Ida, arrived in Duluth in the 1880s from Lithuania. They organized minyans and their home served as a welcoming center for new immigrants coming to the city. Ida Cook spearheaded the establishment of Duluth's first Hebrew school.

Harry Goldie had an interesting career, which included amateur boxing, coaching, and real estate development. He spearheaded the creation of the Calhoun Beach Club. While the club was chartered in 1928 and building began in 1929, financing for it foundered during the Depression, and it didn't officially open until 1946. Goldie's dream for the club entailed an egalitarian social and athletic space that would welcome members regardless of race, religion or sex.

Etta Zrive and Abraham Bearman were born in different Lithuanian shtetls in the 1870s. Their clothes and home furnishings suggest they were economically comfortable by the time that this photo was taken in the early 1900s.

Dr. Moses Barron was instrumental in the creation of Mt. Sinai Hospital in Minneapolis. Prior to hospital construction in 1949, Jewish doctors were denied admitting privileges to local hospitals. Determined to address this discrimination, the Jewish community raised the capital to build Mt. Sinai hospital in South Minneapolis. Initially, Dr. Barron pushed for a Jewish-sponsored hospital out of concern that Jewish doctors serving on the war-front and had full permitting privileges would be frustrated in their practices upon returning home. Dr. Barron served as Mt. Sinai's first Chief of Staff.

A reprint of a photograph of the Popkin family sitting at a dining table set with plates and glasses. Passover Seders begin with a retelling of the story of the deliverance of the Jewish people from Egyptian bondage. It includes foods symbolic of the years of slavery and flight from Egypt. Seders are family and community observances, held primarily in the home. The Popkin family lived in Duluth.
