Gemilus Chesed was a North Side Orthodox congregation that combined social service functions, such as loans and charitable relief, with religious services. The congregation was founded the 1910s and merged in 1969 with another former North Side congregation, Shari Zedek, to form Shari Chesed in St. Louis Park.

Robert Lazarus sits at a work table. There are violins hanging on the wall in the background. Robert Lazarus played violin for both the Oakland and Chicago Symphonies. After his performing career ended, he ran a violin repair shop and music store at the corner of Jackson and 7th Street in St. Paul.

Sylvia Borken stands at the produce counter of Knox Market, which was located at Knox and Plymouth Avenues in Minneapolis. Many small Jewish family-owned and run grocery stored served the North Side neighborhood. Small business ownership was an avenue to success that was open to the earliest group of Jewish immigrants.

The front exterior of the Stein Rexall Drug Store that was a fixture in Hibbing, Minnesota. The business was established in 1919 and located at 2230 First Avenue. In addition to the pharmacy, Stein's supplied oxygen tanks to homes and hospitals, as well as janitorial products across the Iron Range. Etheldoris Stein Grais's cosmetic and perfume counter stocked the latest in beauty supplies.

A toddler stands on the sidewalk wearing a snowsuit and mittens. The Sumner Field Homes were constructed by the W. P. A. in 1938. They were the first federally subsidized housing in Minnesota. Sumner Field replaced housing stock constructed in the 1880 and 1890s that were home to a first generation of Minneapolis immigrants.

Lyndale Auto Parts was located on the North Side. The scrap yard featured signs asking the public to donate their scrap metal to help with the war effort. This sign appeals to a civilian's sense of patriotism and urgency in aiding the war effort.

A man stands loading or unloading salvage from the back of a truck. Salvage was one area of industry where Jews immigrating to the U.S. around the turn of the century were able to participate and thrive. Salvage owners took in scrap metals, compacted them and resold them. During WWll, scrap was at a premium, as the U.S. retooled its manufacturing to aid the Allies.

Etheldoris Grais grew up in Hibbing, Minnesota and attended Hibbing High School. She married Arnold Grais, a pharmacist, and together they ran several Iron Range drug stores.

Photograph looking west down Plymouth Avenue. Cars are driving down the street and train tracks are visible running down the street. Plymouth Avenue was the hub of the Jewish north side. Services from printing to food markets to restaurants and theaters helped create and maintain a sense of community identity and continuity.

View of the front exterior of Swatez Dry Goods Store, which was part of the vibrant business community that served the North Side neighborhood during it's heyday from the 1920s through the 1950s. The store was at the corner of 6th Street and Girard Avenue North, and sold clothes, shoes and housewares.

The Mirskey's store was located at 154 East Fairfield Avenue. The grocery served the neighborhood off of South Robert St. Although it is difficult to tell from the small scale, Fairfield was a busy commercial area with a mix of commercial buildings and private homes.

Photograph of women and men gathered around a large table at the B. W. Harris Manufacturing Company. Harris Manufacturing was founded by Barney Harris in St. Paul in 1916. The company was known for men's outerwear sold under the Zero King label. For decades the home office was in Lowertown in St Paul.

David Scheinberg was the proprietor of a grocery store on Minneapolis' South Side. The South Side had fewer Jewish households than the North Side, and included more immigrants from Romania, whereas the North Side had more from Russia, Poland and Lithuania. The South Side was home to the Reform and Conservative congregations; North Side synagogues were Orthodox with the exception of Beth El. South siders had businesses throughout the South Side, including along Lake Street, Franklin Avenue and the University area.

The earliest Jewish neighborhood in Minneapolis was located around the Cedar-Riverside area, and gradually divided and moved Northwest and South. Labovsky's was located at 16th and Franklin Avenue. In the picture are Shifra and Nuchan Labovsky and their sons, Ben and Joe.

In the picture, Leona (Isadore's sister-in-law) and her daughter Anita, are in the backyard of the Mike Gordon's Ely store: the steps in the background lead to the family home upstairs. Mrs. Rosenbloom, another Jewish Ely resident, is at the right of the picture. The Gordon family was one of the first Jewish families to settle in Ely. Isadore Gordon left Lithuania and traversed Canada before arriving in Duluth. He worked in the shipyards, and peddled the Range. His customers liked him so well that they loaned him money to open a clothing store in Ely. The Rosenblooms raised seven children in Ely, and most of them continued on to college at the University of Minnesota. When the Rosenblooms moved to Minneapolis in 1943, the family store became the Ely American Legion Hall.

Fannie Cohen and her son Sidney (standing on chair) at Cohen's grocery store at 119 S. Wabasha Street in St. Paul. The store opened in 1920 and stayed in business into the 1940s.

The Goldishes were one of a small number of Jewish families who lived and worked along the North Shore in the commercial fishing industry. They both fished and processed their catch for market.
