White Bear Lake Church, 1867-1933. The name changed to Barsness Lutheran Church reflecting its location in Barsness Township in 1933 and remains an active congregation in 2010. This image shows the exterior of the church built in 1883, north and west facades as viewed from across the cemetery. A new basement was built under the structure in 1930 and was fully remodeled and redecorated in 1937.

Dena Peterson (Mrs. W.A. Hopkins) stands before the log cabin in which she was born. Her father, Ole Peterson, hosted the 1866 meeting at which Pope County was organized. Originally in Gilchrist Township, the cabin was later moved to the courthouse lawn in Glenwood. The 1930 courthouse building is visible to the right and the county jail building stands behind the cabin.
The Fremad Association, incorporated in 1874, was a major Pope County department store growing out of the Wollan family store at White Bear Center (1870), later Wollan Bros. store at Glenwood (1872). The corner portion of this building was built in 1893 with an addition to the north (right in photo) before 1900. The upper level had professional offices and a community hall.

Glenwood High School main entrance and auditorium was part of the 1936 expansion of the high school designed by Nairne W. Fisher. This photograph from the late 1970s shows replacement windows.
A patriotic parade on Minnesota Avenue as seen from the Pope County Courthouse lawn. The Glenwood Hotel is seen in the background. The original hotel structure (1881) is seen on Minnesota Reflections as the Bartke Residence and drug store. Matt Ward expanded the property into the Glenwood Hotel, also known as the Ward Hotel. The Ward Family operated the hotel from 1885 to 1945. The building was razed in 1945, the lumber salvaged to construct a new Lake Reno Presbyterian Church north of Glenwood at the corner of MN Highway 29 and Pope County Highway 28.

The Lake Reno Reformed Presbyterian Church was organized in 1869. Rev. Edward Elsey was the first minister, 1882-1896. In this photo, Rev. Meyer is standing at the door. Rev. Meyer served the church from 1898-1900. This wood frame building replaced the first church which was built in 1882. It was moved from its first site on the Hogan farm to the Cummins farm in 1938. It burned in October 1943.

Lowry School exterior, east and south facades, at completion of construction. The Lowry school district consolidated with Glenwood in 1964. High School classes had been bussed to Glenwood since 1930. The school was closed in 1983 and all students bussed to Glenwood. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and razed in 1992.
